    Notes:

Jacob Hisey was reared to manhood and married in Virginia, where he resided till the fall of 1818, when he, with his family, emigrated to Ohio and located in Warren County, in Wayne Township, and opened out right in the woods, living a true pioneer life, enduring all the hardships and deprivations of those early days. Mr. Hisey was a blacksmith, which trade he followed through life, employing others to do the work on the farm. He first settled on 60 acres of land, and from time to time added more to it by purchase till he became owner of 400 acres of good land; here he resided till his death. Mr. Hisey was a very industrious, economical man; one who started in life a poor man, but by his own labor and good management, became quite wealthy. They were parents of fourteen children, nine now survive--Jemima, now Widow Ridge; Hannah, now Mrs. Gard; Amelia, now Mrs. Carr; Rhoda, now Widow Harlan; Emiline, now Mrs. Harmell; Maria, now Widow Banes; Mary Jane, now Widow Terry; Christian and John. Jacob Hisey was a son of Christian Hisey, a native of Germany, who settled in the Shenandoah Valley, Va., in a early day. Jacob Hisey was born and grew to manhood there, and there married Emiline (Amelia?) Williamson. In the year 1816, he moved with his family to Ohio and settled in East Wayne Township, Warren County, where he purchased a small tract of land, which he cultivated in connection with working in and carrying on a blacksmith shop for many years. He raised a large family of children, and lived to see all those who survive well settled in life. By the industry and frugality of himself and wife, besides raising his family he acquired a considerable amount of property. He was for many years a member of the Free-Will Baptist Church, and was a worthy and exemplary member, and contributed liberally for the support of the church of his choice. In October, 1854, his wife, the partner of his younger and advanced years, departed this life. He was again married, and at his death left a widow. He departed this life May 6, 1870, age 84 years, at peace with all mankind, and in full hope of a blissful immortality--the noblest work of God, an honest man. HISEY REUNION
—Thursday, August 19, 1909 was the day set for the annual reunion of the Hisey families. It seemed as though all nature smiled down on us; it was an ideal morning for occasions of this kind, and a goodly number of the connections of this grand old family took advantage of the beautiful morning, and early began to gather at the old homestead, where the first of the Hisey family in this community settled. Joseph W. Hisey and wife now occupy this place.
—Over one hundred years ago the first family of Hiseys came and settled on this farm, two and one-half miles south of Waynesville. Twenty years ago this fall this family held their first reunion and each year since they have met. Each year we have one or more deaths to record, and each year we greet some that have not come before.
—Sarah A. Hamilton is the oldest representative of the family, her mother being Jemima Hisey Ridge. Early this pleasant morning the buggies, carriages and automobiles began driving in from all different directions. As each one came they were met by Joseph Hisey and wife and given a welcome that made each heart glad.
—The dinner was something never to be forgotten. It was remarked that day, that the Hisey ladies were noted for being good cooks, they most certainly proved themselves so, and as we gazed on the sight as they were seated at the dinner table and observed the good looking ones it was with pride we said "I am a member of this family." There were seventy-five or eighty in attendance.
—There were members of the family present from different places: John Kitchen, wife, son and daughter, Will Kitchen and wife, Mrs. Ida Wire and two daughters from Springfield; Isaac Thorne and daughter of Selma; Marshal Terry and wife, Joe Hisey and wife of Dayton; George Hamilton, Mrs. Opal Owens and son, Mrs. Mamie John and baby daughter of Xenia; Fremont Hormell and wife from Oakland; Corwin Hamilton and wife, of Bowersville; George Ridge and wife, of Clarksville; Harmon Dakin, wife and four sons, Mrs. Angie Dakin, of Lebanon; Two gentlemen and one lady by the name of Hisey from Covington, O., distant relatives of this family, also attended. Several neighbors and friends came in the afternoon.
—When dinner was over, the minutes of last year was read and the following officers elected: George Ridge, President; J. W. Hisey, Vice-President; Mary Mannon, Secretary; Albert Shutts, Treasurer. The afternoon was thoroughly enjoyed by all, then came the watermelons which were excellent. And as the sun began to grow dim preparations began for starting to our different homes, each one expressing their pleasure at being there and promising to be there, the third Thursday in August 1910 at the same place. Goodbyes were said, as glad hands clasped and with a silent prayer in many hearts, that if not permitted to meet again here that we may be an unbroken circle in the great Reunion beyond, we parted. --M. C. D.

    Occupation:
Beech Grove Freewill Baptist Church is located on the Harveysburg and
Freeport Turnpike, in Massie Township. The society was organized by Elder
John Hisey in the year 1849, and now numbers about fifty members. About the year 1851 a church was built on a lot donated by Wesley Warwick. Previous to this time the members worshipped in the schoolhouse and in private dwellings. In 1863, the society having largely increased, a more substantial and commodious building was erected on the same site, the old church having been removed. The original membership has now almost disappeared, many having left the neighbor hood, and others died. Previous to the organization of Massie Township this church was known as the “Second Church in Wayne," but it was afterwards changed to its present name. Elder John Hisey was pastor until 1879, when Edward Pemlott, a young minister, was chosen, and after retaining the charge eighteen months, left for Michigan in August 1881, since which time the church has been without a pastor.

Died, at his residence in Wayne township, on Sunday, 26th inst, after a short but painful illness, the Rev. Jacob Hisey, in the 32d year of his age.
Early in life Mr. Hisey professed religion, and attached himself to the Freewill Baptist Church, in which he was soon after ordained a minister of the gospel. He applied himself with great energy to the study of those branches most calculated to aid him in the discharge of his ministerial duties. But upon the sphere of his usefulness he had scarcely entered when death deprived the church of his services, and society of an amiable man. He was a kind father, an affectionate husband, and generous friend. Those who knew him best will regret him most.

    Occupation:

Beech Grove Freewill Baptist Church is located on the Harveysburg and Freeport Turnpike, in Massie Township. the society was organized by Elder John Hisey in the year 1849, and now numbers about fifty members. About the year 1851 a church was built on a lot donated by Wesley Warwick. Previous to this time the members worshipped in the schoolhouse and in private dwellings. In 1863, the society having largely increased, a more substantial and commodious building was erected on the same site, the old church having been removed. The original membership has now almost disappeared, many having left the neighborhood, and others died. Previous to the organization of Massie Township this church was known as the Second Church in Wayne," but it was afterwards changed to its present name. Elder John Hisey was pastor until 1879, when Edward Pemlott, a young minister, was chosen, and after retaining the charge eighteen months, left for Michigan in august 1991, since which time the church has been without a pastor.

    History / Bio:

Rev. John Hisey, farmer and minister; P. O. Waynesville; is a son of Jacob Hisey, who was a son of Christian Hisey, a native of Germany, who settled in the Shenandoah Valley, Va., in an early day. Jacob Hisey was born and grew to manhood there, and there married Emiline Williamson. In October, 1854, his wife, the partner, of his younger and advanced years, departed this life. He was again married, and at his death left a widow. He departed this life May 6, 1870, aged 84 years, at peace with all mankind, and in full hope of a blissful immortality--the noblest work of God, and honest man.

He died in 1869, aged 84 years. Joseph, his son, was 4 years of age when brought to this county, and here was raised and grew to manhood, accustomed to the hardships of those early days; was married, and became the father of two children--Jacob R. and Jemima E. Mr. Hisey bought the old home place of his father and there he resided till his death, April 14, 1878, aged 64 years; his wife died Dec. 28, 1874, aged 50 years. HISEY REUNION.
Thursday August 19, 1915, was an ideal day for the Hisey family to meet for their annual reunion at the home of Joseph Hisey. This year an unusual large number came, and as we always do, met with a hearty welcome from Joseph and Ellen. The tables being in readiness, sheltered by large canvass coverings, seats for all were made. The ladies soon brought forth the baskets, spread the contents upon the tables, and the President invited all to be seated and partake thereof, and this they did to their own satisfaction.
After dinner was over the President called the meeting to order to atten to any business there might be, minutes of 1914 meeting read, officers re-elected, all bills allowed and other business transacted. The afternoon was spent in conversation, drinking lemonade and eating ice cream. LaRue Carr of Xenia furnished the cream which was appreciated by all.
Miss Annie Terry of Pasadena, California, Frank Howe, wife and daughters just back from California, Clarence Hamilton and family of Fort Wayne, Indiana and others from Dayton, Xenia, Selma , Springfield, Wilmington, and Farmersville; also Carleton Lawrence from Chicago was there. Altogether this was declared the best meeting yet. In the evening we adjourned each goin our way to meet at the same place the third Thursday in August 1916. —Mrs. Martha Davis, Secy.

    HISEY REUNION
Thursday, August 19, 1909 was the day set for the annual reunion of the Hisey families.
Over one hundred years ago the first family of Hiseys came and settled on this farm, two and one-half miles south of Waynesville. Twenty years ago this fall this family held their first reunion and each year since they have met. Each year we have one or more deaths to record, and each year we greet some that have not come before.
Sarah A. Hamilton is the oldest representative of the family, her mother being Jemima Hisey Ridge. Early this pleasant morning the buggies, carriages and automobiles began driving in from all different directions. As each one came they were met by Joseph Hisey and wife and given a welcome that made each heart glad.

    Notes:

Professor Hormell died June 17, 1933, in Tucson, Arizona, from heart attack. To the day of his death he had been in his usual health and good spirits.

Professor Hormell has been identified with Ohio Wesleyan in a unique way. He entered the college as a middle "prep" in 1883, and remained in Delaware until August, 1932, when he went with his family to Tucson, on account of his daughter Elizabeth's health. In Ohio Wesleyan he was Instructor in Mathematics and Physics, 1889-91; Assistant Professor of Physics, 1893-4; Professor of Physics, 1894-1930; Emeritus, 1930-22. He served as Dean of Men from 1909 to 1926, and Acting Dean of the College in 1929-30. For many years he was Secretary of the Board of Trustees.

Hormell enjoyed work with his hands,--in his garden, at his bench, with apparatus in his laboratory. When he retired from teaching in 1930 he fitted up a carpenter's shop in the basement of his house on Sandusky Street, and he did the same thing at Tucson. He loved to work with tools; he knew a good job when he saw it, and took pride in doing a good job himself. This sense of craftsmanship, of a good job well done, he carried into everything that he did. For many years he was Chairman of buildings and Grounds.

This same spirit of thoroughness characterized his work as a teacher, and Hormell was first of all a teacher. Teaching he loved, and into it he threw his whole soul. He was enthusiastic in his work in the classroom and laboratory, and the students caught his enthusiasm.

Billy Hormell was interested in folks. He taught physics, and physics, like some other college disciplines, does not ooze human interest. But he was interested in his students and their problems, whether their problems were with physics or with themselves. He was a loyal member of Delta Tau Delta, keeping a friendly and helpful, if necessary at times, corrective hand, on the undergraduate members. He was equally interested in the non-fraternity men, assisting some of their group attempts at the cost both of time and money.

Professor Hormell led the simple life. He led it from choice. He chose his own standards; they were not set for him by others. He was a home body, never happier than with his family or with his friends. His recreations were simple; his garden, his shop, his books. [Source: Article written by Prof. Lewis G. ALUMNI BANQUET HELD AT EPWORTH CHURCH
Professors W. G. Hormell and A. E. Arneson Are Among the Speakers.
    Professor Hormell Speaks.
The company sang a college song and then Professor Hormell, who is one of the oldest instructors at the university in point of service, spoke on "Some Reconstruction Methods of the Ohio Wesleyan university."
Professor Hormell spoke particularly about the work among the students who enter college at the beginning of the year and who, on account of some mental or physical defect, either drop out before they finish their first year or who have difficulty in carrying on their studies. He, being head of the department for men, spoke principally of the men students. He said many problems regarding the men who have difficulty in carrying their studies are brought before his department and that it is doing great work toward making these men become better citizens. He spoke of the system used by the department, of its physical examinations and of the injurious effect of tobacco, especially cigarets, on the young-men and also of the lectures given them on various topics.
