History / Bio:

John R. Leeth, a highly respected citizen of Harrison township, is a native of Pike county, Ohio, and dates his birth from the 11th of February, 1850. His parents, Perry and Lydia (Parker) Leeth, were of Irish origin and reared their son to manhood on the farm, giving him a common school education. In 1881 he removed to this county, where he has since resided, and owns a good farm, which is well cultivated. The marriage of Mr. Leeth with Miss Almira Rose, the daughter of William and Malinda J. Roberts, of German extraction, occurred on the 31st of December, 1876, and unto this union have been born these children: Algon (deceased), Lydia J. Lenora, Fairy, Andrew A., and Michael M. Mrs. Leeth was born in Gallia county, Ohio, June 26 1828. Her husband is a democrat, and the family are members of the United Brethren church.

Waverly—The Rev. James Algon Leeth, 98, Idaho, died at 8 p.m. Friday in Pike County Hospital where he had been a patient three weeks after an extended illness.
He was a member of the Morgantown Church of Christ in Christian Union and had been an active minister until recently.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Morgantown Church of Christ in Christian Union with the Revs. R. G. Humble, James McCain and Robert Mustard officiating. Burial will be in the Leeth family cemetery under direction of the Botkin Funeral Home.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 5 p.m. Sunday.
The son of Samuel and Dora McBee Leeth, he was born on Aug. 7, 1874 in the Leeth Creek community in Pike County.
On Sept. 19, 1903 he was married to Louis Herman who died to Feb. 28, 1969.
Surviving are four sons, Ernest and Paul, Idaho, Henry, Massieville, and James E., Southgate, Mich.; five daughters, Mrs Marie Louderback, Phoenix, Ariz., Mrs. Wilma Williams, Mrs. Esther Blackburn and Mrs. Hazel Gragg, all of Idaho, and Mrs. Edith Savage, Peebles; 48 grandchildren: 65 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a sister Mrs. Stella Holton. Spargusville. He was predeceased by four daughters, two brothers and two sisters.

—A step-father held for padlocking a 10-1/2 foot log chain around the frail body of 10-year ol Robert Feucht insisted today "I have always tried to be good to the boy."
—William Leeth was held in jail whithout charge while county authorities sought a new home for his stepson, who trudged to school yesterday dragging the chain.
—Leeth admitted to Probate Judge Paul Capell that he chained Robert to a kitchen stove because "he ran away."
—Robert told the judge Leeth locked the chain around his neck because he went into the kitchen to get a piece of pumpkin pie denied him at meal time.

Ohioan Sentenced to Serve 90 Days After Youth Drags Log Chain to School.
—Probate court officials investigated offers of homes for ten-year-old Bobby Feucht from all over the country today while the boy's stepfather, William P. Leeth, 55, began a 90-day jail sentence for padlocking him to the kitchen stove and forcing him to the kitchen stove and forcing him to drag a 15-foot log chain to school.
—Probate Judge Paul R. Capell, scoring Leeth in a lengthy decision, passed the sentence last night and disclosed receipt of numerous additional offers of homes.
Charged With Torture
—Leeth declared when first held last week that he chained the boy because "he ran away." Probate officers placed in charge of "torture and cruel punishment" against Leeth.
—Judge Capell said that investigation had shown the boy to be "incorrigible" and deserving of some punishment, but "not to the extent of placing him in chains, which constitutes cruelty and torture and for which you owe a debt to society in the form of punishment."
—"If you were a person of average intelligence," he told Leeth, "penalty in the maximum would be made, but the report of psychiatrists who have examined you and found you to be subnormal warrants consideration."
Don't Condemn Child
—He asserted parents' insufficiencies frequently were more responsible for children going wrong than the children's own delinquencies and added, "when parents permit conditions to grow and exist and if the child happens to step out of our ideas of right action, we can not condemn the child."

Mack Leeth
Dies At 72
Andrew McClellan Leeth was born September 20 1887 in Paulding County, Ohio the son of John and Almira Leeth, and departed this life January 21, 1960 at the age 0f 72 years, 4 months and 11 Jays.
At the age of 17 Mack with his parents and family came to Clare county and settled on the farm in Sheridan Township where he lived until death excepting four years he spent in Colorado, from 1926 to 1930 because of ill health.
He was united in marriage to Mabel Garver June 7, 1910 and to this union were born four children: Edna Hutchinson, Emma Carncross, Forrest Leeth and Marguerite Kleiner, alll of rural Clare.
Nine years ago his health began to fail and for the past four years almost, he had been a bed patient. Two years ago he and his wife went to the home of their daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Everet Carncross where he passed away.
Everything that kind hands and loving hearts could do was done in caring for him.
He was a kind husband and father and became a Christian many years ago and united with the Eagle Church of God where he held membership.
Besides his faithful wife and children eh leaves to mourn his passing 14 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, two sisters; Mrs. Lenora Cramley of Antwerp, Ohio and Mrs. Madonna Stevens of Lnsing, one brother: Giles Leeth of Newaygo, nieces and nephews and a host of neighbors and friends.
Three sisters and two brothers precede him in death.
Funeral Services were held Monday 2:00 p.m. at the Thurston Funeral Home in Clare, Rev. Elza Beery officiating assisted by Rev. Mrs. Lou Beery. He was laid to rest in Cherry Grove Cemetery.

Madonna Grace Stevens, 73, of St. Petersburg Florida died at the Memorial Center Hospital in that city on May 22, following a seven weeks illness.
Born January 11, 1897 in Ohio she moved to Clare in 1903 with her parents John and Elmira Leeth
She was married to Ralph A. Stevens in Clare in 1917 and he passed away in July 1946.
She is survived by one daughter Mrs. Robert Crisson (Ida May) of St. Petersburg Florida, 10 grandchildren, three. great grandchildren, one brother, Giles Leeth of Freemont Michigan.
Funeral services were held from the Stephenson Doherty Funeral Home on Monday, May 25 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Jack Gray officiating and burial in Cherry Grove Cemetery.

Giles E. Leeth, 75, of 306 E 6th Street in Clare, passed away on November 10th at his residence following a two-year illness.
He was born on August 7th, 1899 in Antwerp, Ohio to John and Almira (Rose) Leeth and married Wava M. Turner on April 23rd, 1920 in Clare.
A retired tool and die maker, he moved to Clare from Lansing in 1971.
Surviving are his wife, Wava, four sons, Garth of Santa Barbara, Californis; Zane of Rockville, Maryland, K.A. Of Lansing, and Loy of San Diego; a daughter, Mrs. Dexter Pridmore of Columbus, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

MISS ALMA LEETH
—Funeral services for Miss Alma Leeth, 83, of the Idaho community, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Boyer Funeral Home in Waverly, with Rev. R. G. Humble officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Latham Cemetery. Friends called at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Friday.
—Miss Leeth died at 6:30 a.m. Thursday at the Pike County Hospital, following an extended illness.
—A native of Pike County, she was born on Jan. 16, 1892, a daughter of Orgen and Genavry (Walls) Leeth.
—Her only survivors are one sister, Mrs. Mella Hart of Beaver; and several nieces and nephews.

WAVERLY: Paul Leeth, 99 was born on June 28, 1913 in Pike County, Ohio, the son of the late Rev. James Algon and Louie Herman Leeth. He passed from this life to meet the Lord and Savior on January 20, 2013, at the Adena Regional Medical Center, Chillicothe, Ohio.
On May 16, 1936 at the Waverly Church of Christ in Christian he married his lifelong sweetheart, Emojane Tackett Leeth who preceded him in death on September 9, 2009.
Surviving are three sons: Charles Edward, Gerald Gene, and Paul David Leeth all of Piketon, one daughter, Paulette Jane Moats and husband David of Waverly; 18 grandchildren, thirty-two great grandchildren, and ten great great grandchildren; and three sisters: Wilma Williams, Edith Savage, and Hazel Gragg.
He was preceded in death by two sons: Terrance Ray and Ronald Leeth; a granddaugter, Sherry Kay Leeth; a daughter-in-law, Julie Leeth; three brothers: Ernest, Henry, and James Leeth; and six sisters: Chloe and Ruth Leeth, Marie Louderbach, Lena Newman, and Esther Blackburn.
Mr. Leeth was a retired carpenter from Ohio Dept. of Transportation for many years, a member of the Riverdale Church of Christ in Christian Union where he served as Sunday School Teacher, and enjoyed singing at revivals with his brothers in the Leeth Brothers Singing Group. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing.

—Leeth--My days are like a shadow that declineth: He weakened my strength. He shortened by my days: but Thou O Lord shall endure forever, for Thou are the same, and Thy years shall have no end. But like the shadow has been the passing away of our loved one.
—Dennis Leeth, son of Leslie and Rebecca Parker Leeth, who was born at Morgantown, Ohio, September 20, 1905, departed this life October 6, 1945, at the age of 40 years and 16 days.
—In 1928 he was united in marriage to Ona Crabtree. Three daughters were born to this union. one dying in infancy. In 1934 he was again united in marriage to Harriett Smith, to which union 5 children were born.

OBITUARY
INA WALLS - A funeral service for Ina Walls was held 1 p.m. Monday at the Morgantown Church of Christ in Christian Union. Mrs. Walls, 78, of 3623 Green Ridge Road, Peebles, died at 1:07 p.m. Friday in Mercy Hospital, Portsmouth. A Pike County native, Mrs. Walls was born April 21, 1907 to pearl and Ola Leeth Parker. She was preceded in death by her parents, a twin sister and two brothers. She was a member of the Morgantown Church of Christ in Christian Union. Mrs. Walls is survived by her husband, Neal, who she married on Nov. 12 1930. She is also survived by a daughter, Catherine Herman, of Bainbridge; two sons, Richard, of Waverly, and Elmer,of Grove Ridge Road, Peebles; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. The reverends James McCain and Walter Snyder officiated the funeral service, with burial following at the Gardner Cemetery.
