    Notes:

Shelby county was formed in 1819 from Miami County and was named for General Isaac Shelby, Revolutionary War hero and first Governor of Kentucky. The village of Hardin was named the county seat, and an old blockhouse served as the site for conducting official county business. Several sessions of court were held there, but the county seat was removed to Sidney following the December 13, 1819 session, and remains there today.
Beck School-District No. 6--The 3rd school built in Dinsmore Township was built in this section in 1844. It was a log building about 18' x 20' and was called the Beck School. The first teacher was James Beck. (Reference: "One-Room Schools")
Teachers and Pupils-Reunion—Away back in the first half of the century there stood on a knoll in what is now District #5 in Perry Township, an old log house, presided over by an Irish dominie named Beck, who taught the rising generation of the day the great principles embodied in the three "R's". He was a peppery old man but exceedingly good-hearted and his memory is still green. In 1856, when roads were cut through the county, the site was changed a little west and at the side of the pike was a new brick building erected. This served the purpose for many years but finally it too went the way of all houses and was succeeded in 1877 by the present substantial edifice, known as the D.H. Crumbaugh School. (Source: Sidney Weekly Journal, 8-25-1893)
Anna is situated almost centrally in the wide expanse of wealthy farming country which characterizes Shelby county north of the Miami gorge. Land was first entered in this north territory in 1831, but the first settlers who arrived to stay were George Turner, Joseph Green and John Munch, in 1832. David Taylor, his wife and eight children came in 1834, Alfired Staley in 1833, and immigration followed rapidly from that time forward. The first schoolhouse was built in 1836, and stood on the corner of what became "Loramie cemetery," between Botkins and Anna. Its first teacher was William D. Johnston, the second, Wesley Shorts, and the third, Jonathan Counts. This was in the greased-paper window epoch of the district ; but in 1840 a second building, while similar, was lighted with real glass. William Wilson and E. T. Mede were early teachers there. The Beck schoolhouse, James Beck, teacher, was put up in 1844, Hewed logs, instead of round, came into vogue by this time, and in 1854 the state law provided better schools at public expense. Dear friend & Nephew
—With great pleasure I received your letter dated the 14th of June, I received it the 10th of July, & was really extreamly glad to hear that you & your Mother, Brothers & sisters were all well, & doing well, it is a great satisfaction to me to hear of my friends being well & doing well I am verry glad that you took such pains to give the particulars respecting all my friends & near relatives in Ireland, I was verry sorry to hear that temporal difficulties had come across my aged & loving brother who was when young highly esteemed by all that knew him I yesterday wrote a letter to brother John in which I requested him to let me know what the difficulties were that you could not rightly explain, it is a great pleasure to me to hear of my friends being well & doing well & sorry when I hear of any difficulties attend any of them; but I still wish to hear the truth let it be good or bad dear James I have the pleasure of letting you know that I enjoy good health, but find that age is pulling me fast down, my head almost white & somewhat balded though my face is still full & rudy coloured, my children & their families are also, I believe at present well I have seen none of James Pattys family nor my son Francis Hugh since spring a year ago, but William Beck my son was down there a few weeks ago, they were then all well & doing well, James Noland & Martha Burns my daughter were well a few days ago & their two children also, my son William & his family are also well Joseph Elliot & Susannah & their 3 children are well & doing well, I now have my home with them, he is now seeding my farm & some of the wheat he has sown is now up green there are only about 26 acres of my place yet cleared & fit for cultivation Joseph will seed about twelve or thirteen of it this fall, there are about 6 or seven acres of it in meadow, the rest for oats next spring.
—To give you particular & full statement of the Agricultural, manufactural commercial & Political state of the country is more than I can do properly at this time. Agriculture is rapidly improving & the Agriculturist are the most happy & indipendent people & a number of them can ride to their meetings or places of worship in their silver mounted chaise or sedans. Cotton & woolen Manufacturies are getting to be established in every good town & Manufacturies of every kind are geting to be established in many parts of the union, so that it appears to me that the United States will like England become a great Manufacturing Country and as for commerce we have commerce with all parts of the civilised world & peace with all- Mexico I believe feels dissatisfied that Texas is anexed to the United States but suppose she will not declare war against us, as she is weak its not in her power to do us any injury, without some stronger power assist them, & none will, without Great Britain does, & I think as they have tried the United States twice, they know better than to try them again as we are four times as strong as we were the time of the last war, you stated in your letter that if an eruption should take place, that our Navey be sent to the bottom of the deep & our Maritime Cities left in ashes, but the time of the last war we had four victories on the deep for one that Britain had, & our Maritime strength 4 times what it was then, & the British settlements anxious to become now apart of the union, these considerations & knowing that was would be to both countries I think we will continue at peace. As to the political state of the country, Politics runs high at present we are three political parties, Whigs Democrats & Abolitionists or liberty party, I shall send you now some whig Journals, & probable will again send you some loco journals so you can see how both views Politics, the Locos assumes the name of Democrats but I think they do not advocate democratic principals, they advocate a one man power & if their plan be carried out we will become a Monarchy but I hope they will soon see that the Whig policy is the most Democratic. Our State election is the 14th of next month after that I will send you some more Journals.
—I shall now quit politics & give you a brief sketch of the country this country is a flat country & rich soil & when well cultivated produces great crops, corn or maize will turn out from 20 to 60 Bushels per acre and one of our neighbours thinks he will this season have 75 bushels to the acre of wheat will yield from 15 to 40 bushels per acre & other crops in proportion as the crops has been abundant this season, grain is fell in price verry low before harvest wheat sold at 75 & 80 cents per bushel of [?]lles & is now down to 50 cents, but the journals I send you will show you the price of all kinds grain and every thing else in Cincinnati it had not 2000 inhabitants & but last spring above 80,000.
—Dear James it astonishes me to hear of the rapit improvement of Ireland, in my day there there was no such factories as that you are concerned in ... And it seems also strange that Common work hands in that country get but 15 or 20 per annum & that Archibald & you get so large salaries Time wont admit of me to write any more as I must to the post office before the mail closes please give my loving respects to your Mother & to your brothers & Sisters & to your Mothers brothers & sisters that I was acquaint when young, & to Mr David McConnell that was my near neighbour & when you write to me again let me know they all are & where they reside I add no more but my children desires their loving respects to be sent to you & to their aunt Eliza & all their cousins
And believe me dear James Alexander to be your
    Affectionate
    Uncle
    James Beck

    OBITUARY
...Rev. Francis Hugh Beck was born in Vandalia, Montgomery County, Ohio, April 21, 1827, and died at his home in Kessler, Ohio, March 2, 1904, at the age of 76 years, 10 months and 11 days.
...As he grew toward the years of manhood he made his home for several winters with Enoch Sinks of whom he learned the shoe-making trade. He seemed like a brother to the children in that home, among whom were Davis and Noah Sinks, now of Troy. It was from this home that our brother was married to Amelia Cress, November 8, 1846, by Benjamin Furnas, Esq. She was the daughter of Abram and Mary Cress and their married life extended over a period of fifty-two years.
...In 1849 they moved to Shelby County, Ohio, where they lived for ten years. In 1859 they came back to their native township to live and at once became active members of the Lower Stillwater Christian Church. What memories cluster about the names of the sturdy men of that period who were co-workers with Brother Beck. Among them we may mention Emanuel Coble, John Guillen, John Wilds, Daniel Waymire, Enoch Sinks, John C. Waymire, Davis Mast, Andrew Sinks, William Coble and many others, all of whom have passed away.
...Brother Beck possessed a gift of exhortation from his early years and later he entered the gospel ministry. He was ordained at the session of the Miami Ohio Christian Conference held at New Carlisle several years age. Rev. C. J. Jones, D. D., preached the ordination sermon.
...Among those associated with Brother Beck in more recent years may be mentioned:P Rev. W. Al. Gross, William Pearson, C. C. Phillips, William Jay, Daniel Brewer, I. C. Waymire and H. Y. Rush.
...It can also be said of our departed brother that he was a public spirited man and was at times chosen to fill positions of public trust. He served two terms as trustee of Union township and was twice elected County Infirmary Director. He was filling this responsible position at the time of his death. The other members of the Infirmary Board, together with the Superintendent of that institution, attended the funeral service as a mark of respect to his memory.
...The greatest sorrow of our brother's life came to his home March 26, 1899, when his life-long companion passed away after an illness of twelve weeks duration.
...To them had been given seven children, four of whom are living: namely, George W. Beck, of Kessler, J. Warren Beck, of Wengerlawn, Mary J. Beck, who has always stayed with her father, T. A. Beck, of Brookville. There are also eight grand children living and six great grand children.
...On August 31, 1902, brother Beck was again joined in marriage with Elizabeth Eidemiller who survives him. His departure has brought great sorrow to her.
...The affliction of our departed brother had been growing worse gradually for a few years. About four weeks ago he suffered an acute attack of his malady and slowly sank away and when the end came he went peacefully to rest.
...The funeral services and burial took place at the West Union Church. The house was filled and many beautiful flowers rested upon the casket as expressions of respect and love for the departed and sympathy for the sorrowing family....The pastor was assisted in the services by Revs. I. C. Waymire and O. S. Thomas....His form was tenderly placed beside that of his companion of other years and we were all comforted with the assurance that our loss is his infinite gain. James became experiienced in the chemical process and became aware of the commerical enterprise in supplying chemicals to the trade. He settled in Belfast in 1854, and subsequently was founder and proprietor of Belfast Chemical Works, which later became James A. Beck & Son - chemical manufactures principally to the linen trade. In 1859 he purchased Everton House and Estate from the marquis of Donegal, and died there on March 1, 1897, being buried in Belfast City Cemetery. His will, dated November 3, 1895, was proved at Belfast Probate Registry on April 21, 1897, and included several charitable bequests.
...There was a history that his father died young, and that they were estranged. Neither facts are substantiated by the various researches, in fact his father died when he was 26, and probably still at home....Married into the Bullick family, as did his cousin Alexander. Created a bit of a stir by marrying his late wife's younger sister. Developed a passion for travel which was passed on to his family. (Source: Information received from Allan C. Beck, John W. OBITUARY
    George W. Beck
...Soon after the evening shadows had gathered on Wednesday, March 19, 1919, the earthly career of George W. Beck came to a close, and the heart that had palpitated with life for 71 years and more was now still forever in death. He was the oldest son of Rev. Francis H. and Amelia Beck whose family consisted of 7 children, 3 of whom died in early childhood. Of the four, who lived to manhood and womanhood years, George is the first to be called. He was born in Montgomery county, Ohio, August 8, 1847, but in his early childhood his parents moved to Shelby county. Within a few years they returned to Montgomery county and after tarrying there a few brief years they purchased for themselves a home where Kessler now stands in 1869 and that became their permanent residence.
...In that same year George began his long career as a school teacher and he continued to prosecute his school work for forty-three years in succession. His rectitude of character and lofty ideals were powerful factors in the success he achieved in his long tenure of service. Not only did he train the youthful minds of his pupils, but what noble impulses be awakened in the hearts of the children entrusted to his care! By word and deed he sought to guide their young feet aright. He gave encouragement and kindly assistance to many as they left the school room to begin their careers in life. Many are the parents who have great reason for genuine gratitude to the deceased for the faithful service he rendered to their boy or their girl. In his honest, rugged face there was reflected the spirit of friendly interest as he came in contact with them whether in the school-room, or on the play ground. And a genial, whole-hearted greeting was accorded them as he met them along the highway of life.
...Nor were his public activities confined to his chosen field of teaching in the public schools. In 1866, while yet in his teens, he became a member of the Sugar Grove Christian church near Fidelity under the labors of Rev. William Jay. More than thirty years ago he transferred his membership to the West Union Christian church and continued in its fellowship until the end came. He served as a trustee of the church for many years and where he could no longer attend to the duties of the office on account of failing health he was made trustee emeritus. During those years he was active in the Sunday School work and was the faithful teacher of the young mens class for many years.
...He became a member of the I. O. O. F. At West Milton in April 189_ and at his own request the lodge rendered its impressive burial service over his remains. He became a member, also, of the Masonic Fraternity at West Milton and was raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason in 1902.
...On August 4, 1874, the deceased was united in marriage with Mary Florence Miller who stood by his side for 31 years and more as the inspiration of his life. Compelled to be absent from home much of his time by his chosen profession she bravely assumed the cares and duties of the home and by her faithfulness and industry and devotion, she rendered possible the success he achieved as a public school teacher. Her home was the throne of her power. For it she lived and planned and wrought. Four little tiny girls came into their home, May, Mattie, Clara and Minni. Mattie died in infancy. The other three grew to womanhood years and survive the father. May became the wife of Arthur Patty, Clara was wedded to Roy hale, and Minnie has been the bright light in the home of Theodore Macy as the companion of his life. The mother passed away March 30, 1906.
...In December, 1912 Mr. Beck was again joined in marriage with Mrs. Mary McCool who died in 1916 and he was again left to journey alone upon life's highway. But he was comforted with the love and companionship of his children with whom he found a congenial home. They cared for him, ministered to him during his long affliction and at last, on March 19, 1919, he passed away from the home of his daughter May, at the age of 71 years, 7 months and 11 days.
...Besides his children he leaves eight grandchildren, two brothers J. Warren and Albert, and one sister Mary Jane Beck, to whom his departure brings a sense of loss and sorrow not to be expressed in words.
...Funeral was held Friday at 2:30 p. m., at the West Union Christian church, Roy O. P. Furnas officiating. (Source: Troy-Hayner Genealogy and History Center, Troy, Ohio, copy in file)
