    History / Bio:

William Shrader was born in Monroe township December 25, 1845, and is a son of Charles and Rosanna (Gates) Shrader, whose family numbered four children, two sons and two daughters. He was reared to manhood upon his father's farm, early becoming familiar with all the labors that fall to the lot of the agriculturist. From the time of spring planting until crops were harvested in the autumn he assisted in the work of the fields, and then entered the district school of the neighborhood. At the call for one hundred-day men he responded to his country's need and joined the service, although not yet twenty-one years of age. He became a private in Company G, One Hundred and Forty-seventh Ohio Cavalry, being mustered in at Camp Dennison. The regiment went to Washington to defend the capital city and was there stationed until the expiration of his term.
After his military service Mr. Shrader returned to the home farm, upon which his father had located in March, 1857, and, on attaining his majority, he assumed the management of the place, which was a wild and unimproved tract covered with a heavy growth of timber, consisting of oak, hickory, ash, elm and walnut trees. There was also a log house and log stable upon the place. With characteristic energy he began its development and made excellent and substantial improvements thereon. He there owns fifty acres of land on sections 18 and 19, the entire place being under cultivation. He carries on general farming, but also makes a specialty of raising tobacco and finds it a profitable source of income.
In 1881 Mr. Shrader was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Knife, daughter of David and Jane (Pearson) Knife. They were both born in Miami county, and were the parents of four children, living: Mrs. Shrader; Ella, wife of Allen Vore; Charles, on the home farm; Cora, wife of Warren Cress. All are living in Miami county. To Mr. and Mrs. Shrader have been born seven children, three now living: John W., born December 22, 1873; Susanna, July 21, 1882, and Bessie M., November 26, 1887. They have also lost four children, Minnie P., Frankie, Charles and an infant. In his political views Mr. Shrader is a Republican, but has never sought or desired political preferment. Socially he is connected with D. M. Rouzer Post, G. A. R., of Tippecanoe City, and enjoys the esteem and friendship of his comrades of the blue.

    J. W. Schrader. Belonging to that class of citizens who have passed their entire lives on the same property and have followed no other vocation that that of the agriculturist, J. W. Schrader also typifies the solid and substantial type of tillers of the soil upon whom the nation is dependent for its food supplies. This progressive and intelligent Monroe township agriculturist was born on the farm which he now owns and operates, on December 22, 1873, a son of William and Elizabeth (Knife) Shrader. William Shrader was well and favorably known as an agriculturist in Monroe township for many years and had the respect and confidence of those with whom he was associated. He made a success of his affairs, being a man of industry and possessed of good managerial abilities, and during the war between the states fought as a soldier of the Union. He and his wife were the parents of two children who grew to maturity: J. W., and Mrs. Susan Burnsides. J. W. Shrader acquired a public school education in the country districts, and has always lived on the home place, of which he became the owner after the death of his parents. He has a farm consisting of fifty acres, in addition to which he farms another fifty acres, which is well improved in every way, and carries on general farming and stock raising in a way that insures success. He married, July 28, 1901, May, daughter of Elijah and Rosa (Fisher ) Rutter, residents of Tippecanoe City, Ohio, and to this union there has been born one son William E., who is assisting his father in the work of the home place. The good citizenship that has always characterized Mr. Shrader's career was particularly evident during the period of the World war, when he was loyal support of all war movements and activities. WILL
    West Milton Record
    May 20, 1925
...A terribly sad experience came to the home of Charles A. Burnside, near Ginghamsburg on Tuesday, May 12, when his beloved companion passed away leaving the husband and fourteen children to mourn the departure of a devoted wife and mother. The youngest child is only 11 weeks old. The mother had been in delicate health for some time and then she suffered an attack of the flu from which she was unable to recover.
...She was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Schrader whose home for many years was east of West Milton, but now they reside in Tippecanoe City.
...On August 17, 1898, Susanna was untied in marriage with Charles Burnside. For 27 years, lacking three months, they walked side by side, each a true helpmate to the other. By her devoted sacrificing life she leaves the impress of a fine character and noble life with her loved ones for whom she gave her full meed of devotion and affection to the end. She bequeathed to all a heritage of tender memories that will be cherished as long as life shall last. Why a devoted wife and loving mother should be taken from the home is a mystery we cannot understand but we know that God doeth all things well and He will give his comforting grace to the sorrowing hearts left behind. Her age was 42 years, 9 months and 11 days.
...Beside the children she leaves four granddaughters, the aged parents, one brother, and a multitude of other relatives and friends in whose hearts and lives she had won for herself an unusually large place.
...The funeral service was conducted by Rev. O. P. Furnas in the West Union church, assisted by Rev. Coppock of the Brethren church. The burial occurred in the adjoining cemetery. (Source: Information received from Dale Landon)

    MEMORIES... by Patricia Beck Hormell
Grandma always had a flower garden with old fashioned bearded iris, peonies, rose of sharon and roses. She even grew flowers between the vegetables. These flowers have become some of my favorite, although I like most flowers. She loved to read and would read everything including magazines, farm journals, books and newspapers.
They never had running water in any of their homes nor an indoor bathroom. They carried water from the pump outside the kitchen to wash dishes and bath. Using the bathroom was a walk down the path to the little wooden building with two seats. In the winter it was a cold visit and in the summer you had to watch out for the bees and wasps making a new home.
I only remember Grandma having white hair. Dad said her hair turned white when she was in her twenties. Until she had a stroke and could no longer take care of it, she wore her hair long (below her waist) but in a braid pinned up around her head. Her hair was a pretty white not the yellow-gray that some people have. I remember when she had to have it cut after Mom tried washing brushing and braiding it while taking care of her. When she recovered from the stroke she continued to keep it short and it was still a very thick and a full head of hair.
I also remember Grandma wearing sun bonnets in the garden and carrying vegetables or eggs in her apron. Both of my grandmothers wore sun bonnets and used their apron for a basket and both of them made their sun bonnets and aprons.
