    MEMORIES... by Patricia Beck Hormell
Everyone says she had a fiery temper and was very feisty. I don't remember that - but what I do remember is how short she was. Maybe she used her temper to make up for her stature. What I remember most is a picture that she had hanging over her sofa in her home on Kensington Drive in Dayton, Ohio. It was a rather dark, gruesome picture of Gladiators and lions in a Roman arena. The picture always bothered me, I didn't like it, but couldn't help staring at it. On the brighter side, my grandmother always had cookies to share, and a friendly neighbor that would give me a bag full of nickel candy bars. Back then nickel candy bars were big and a real treat for a young girl.

    Memories... by Patricia Beck Hormell
When grandma was not busy gardening, milking cows, feeding the chickens, slopping the hogs, or canning she was quilting, tatting, or crocheting. I remember the bright, colorful, jars of vegetables and fruit sitting in rows down in the cellar or in the pantry that Grandma had "put up". She made the best homemade sauerkraut and pickles. I still have her recipe for Spicy Sweet Chunk Pickles. Grandma also made cottage cheese and butter. I remember the cottage cheese hanging in a bag on the clothes line or helping churn butter in the old glass butter churn, watching the paddles turn and the liquid separate. She always wore a house dress even in the garden. I never saw her wear slacks. Even though life on the farm was hard work and long days, grandma always seemed cheerful and was good to me.
Grandma made quilts for each of her grandchildren and since I was her first grandchild I had my choice of several. I chose the one she intended for me to have. Even when her fingers were swollen and arthritic and they didn't want to move she still did beautiful work. As a child I sat on the front porch of the farmhouse and learned to piece the many colors of material together that Grandma collected from flour and feed sacks, or scraps leftover from sewing. Back then flour and feed came in cloth sacks that could be used by the farmer's wife for sewing dresses, making quilts, etc.
Grandma 'let' me help with the dishes and harvest produce from the garden. I liked to take a warm, ripe tomato, wipe it on my jeans and eat it right out in the garden; or peel a turnip and eat it.
I will always remember the smell of leftover pie pastry sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon, baked till flaky and lightly browned, placed on the table where we could break off a piece for a sweet treat. Grandmas' pies were great! After I was married I wanted to make a pie and made a trip to visit my grandparents so grandma could give me her recipe for pastry. When I asked her for the recipe she told me that she didn't have a recipe but could teach me to make pie pastry. Then grandma proceeded to take out the ingredients and with a pinch of this and a handful of that Grandma made a pie. That was my start at baking pies.
Grandma fell and broke her hip from which she never recovered. I visited her in the hospital even though everyone said she was not able to recognize anyone. I'm glad I paid a visit and know that she did recognize me because she talked about Kim, my daughter, and asked how she was. Grandma had kidney failure and died the next day.

Nelson Smith an employee of the Hocking Flint Glass Company of 630 Garfield avenue, in company with Miss Muriel Colvin, daughter of Mrs. Sidney Colvin of East street, stole a march on their friends and eloped to Covington, Kentucky this morning with marital intentions.
Both the young man and the young woman are of age, but they decided to make the trip to Kentucky in order that the former might escape being "kidded" by his factory friends.
Yesterday afternoon Smith went to his foreman Chris Denning and asked for permission to be off work today.
    "What for?" asked Denning:
"Why, I want to go down to Kentucky and get married like you did", said Smith, referring to the foreman's own trip to Covington not long ago.
Denning granted Smith a day's leave of absence and promised to keep his secret until after his return home tonight. The young couple will make their home for the present with the groom's sister Mrs. W. J. Harris of Garfield avenue.

    Memories... by Patricia Beck Hormell
Mom always had a needle nearby, whether it was a sewing needle, crochet hook or knitting needles. She made quilts, afghans, sweaters, tablecloths, pillowcases, baby clothes, dolls, toys and ornaments. She taught me to sew, embroidery and tried to teach me how to crochet. Eventually mom gave up when I kept wanting to switch hands in the middle, so I went on to learn from a book and we shared patterns. I also learned you just can't switch from left handed to right handed in the middle of a project.
We used to go to the orchards and pick cherries, apples or strawberries for canning and preserving. Mom made the best homemade apple butter and applesauce. With her help I learned to make jelly, can fruits and vegetables, clean and cut up chickens for the freezer, and cook. Spring time was always a busy time around our home.
While I was growing up, mom would have the record player or radio tuned to country music while sweeping or dusting or spring cleaning. When records gave way to CD's and a portable player she plugged in her earphones and still enjoyed country music.

    Former Resident Amazed By City
A 78-year old Ohio woman who lived in Lawton before statehood visited here Saturday and expressed amazement at the city's growth since she left 57 years ago.
The visitor was Mrs. Ethel Beck, 78, Port Jefferson, Ohio, whose late husband, Walter H. Beck, built one of the first large farm buildings in Comanche county before statehood.
Mrs. Beck was traveling with her son, Thearen Beck, Englewood Ohio, and his wife, Charlotte, and daughter, Mary Ann, 5. As a toddler I couldn't pronouce "Walter" and so he became my Uncle Balby. To a young girl he was very exciting and interesting as he owned horses and brahma bulls and was in the rodeo. I remember one time when his horse turned around and bit him on the shoulder while he was tending it in the barn. He would take me rides on a pony--every little girls dream!

    Memories... by Patricia Beck Hormell
Kenny was fair, blonde, blue eyed and very, very friendly. He was not shy like me, but talkative and outgoing; like dad he never met a stranger. He liked Hoppalong Cassidy, toy soldiers and toy farm animals. Even though there was a five year age difference, we got along swell together. We shared toys, games and secrets.
I was scared and devastated when I was in the seventh grade and the school principal called me to his office to inform me that my brother had been hit by a car and died. It was a very sad time and I felt lonely. My parents had already bought Christmas presents and had them wrapped and under the tree. The packages were given to a needy family.

Randolph Tp. Boy, 7, Killed In Dash For School Bus
Lad Runs In Front Of Auto On Rt. 48 As Mother Watches
A seven-year-old boy was injured fatally about 8:30 a.m. Thursday when he was struck by an automobile in the 8500 block on N. Main st. (State Route 48), when he dashed across the roadway to meet an approaching school bus, as his mother watched helplessly.
The child, Kenneth Beck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thearen Beck of 8513 N. Main st., was pronounced dead on arrival at Good Samaritan hospital.
John V. Walker, owner of Walker Motor Sales, who also lives on State Route 48, was the driver of the car which struck the child according to Deputy Sheriff Thomas Siegman.
Siegman said the boy and his mother had been standing in front of their home on the west side of the road, waiting for the Randolph tp. school bus. As the child saw the bus approach from the south, he ran across the roadway and in front of Walker's southbound car. Mrs. Beck told Deputy Siegman at the hospital that the accident was not Walker's fault.
The boy was a second grade pupil at Randolph tp. school.
So far this year there have been 38 traffic fatalities in the city and county, 30 of them having occurred in rural areas. At this same time last year, 74 persons had died in traffic accidents with 46 of the deaths reported on county highways.

Walker had left his home, which is located a little more than a mile north of the scene of the accident, about 8:15 a.m. Deputy Stegman said traffic tests showed Walker was driving not more that 35 miles an hour when the child was struck.

Fatal: A contradiction of the old wheeze about boys hating school came in a tragic way Thursday. Standing in front of their home at 8513 N. Main St., little Kenneth Beck was waiting with his mother, Mrs. Thearen Beck, for the Randolph tp. school bus. When the seven-year-old lad saw the bus approaching, he started to dash across N. Main (Covington Pike) to meet it. He darted into the path of an auto driven by auto dealer John V. Walker—with both his mother and Walker powerless to prevent the tragedy. The boy's death the city-county toll to 58. It was 73 this time last year.
