Notes |
Killed in battle at Chickamauga, Georgia. Buried in an unknown grave in the National Cemetery at Chattanooga, Tennessee. For several years before the was engaged with our father under the firm name of "William Harlan & Son", and was associated with him when, September of 1861, he enlisted and became a member of Company F, 35th regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted for three years; was at once commissioned a second Lieutenant, later promoted to be a first lieutenant, and for a time acted in the capacity of brigade quartermaster. He was in command of the company during the "Tullhoma Campaign" of June 1863, and continued in command (his captain being home on sick leave) until Sunday morning, September 20, the second day of the great battle. He fell in "Kelley Field", while his brigade was resisting the furious assault of the Confederate General Breckenridge. The body was buried upon the field; later removed to an unknown grave in the National Cemetery. He was never married. [Source: compiled by Alpheus H. Harlan, "History and Genealogy of the Harlan Family", Baltimore: Gateway Press, Inc., 1988]
The regiment left the State of Ohio September 26, 1861, for Kentucky, 812 strong, and took part in the various marches and skirmishes with the Army of the Cumberland, under General Buell, barely missing the battle of Shiloh in April, 1862. At the battle of Chickamauga on the 19th of September, 1863, the regiment was on the extreme left, where they fought for several hours almost hand to hand with the rebels under Longstreet. On the 20th, the fighting was the same, and night found them still holding the rebels at bay, while the main army fell back on Chattanooga. Following this, came Mission Ridge, Ringgold, Dalton, Resaca, Pine Mountain, Kenesaw and Peachtree Creek. They were mustered out at Chattanooga, Tennessee, in August 1864.
