2007
Samuel Harlan, farmer; P. O. Harveysburg; born in Massie Township Oct. 16, 1829; is a son of Enoch and Elizabeth (Harvey) Harlan, natives of Orange County, N. C. The grandparents were Enoch and Lydia Harlan; he was probably born in Ireland, the ancestors being from that country. Enoch Harlan died in North Carolina, but his wife came to Ohio, and died in Clinton County,. Enoch, the father of our subject, emigrated to Ohio, and located in Clinton County, in 1806; resided there till 1824, when he removed to Warren County, where he lived till his death, July 26, 1866, aged 80 years and 5 months; his wife died May 9, 1875, aged nearly 83 years. They had ten children, seven now survive--Lydia, Mahlon, Carter, John, Nathaniel, Samuel and Wilson. Mr. Harlan was truly a pioneer; when he came to Clinton County, he had to cut his road through the wilderness from Cincinnati to where he settled, and there he opened out right in the woods, and endured the many deprivations and hardships of those early days; there he labored for eighteen years; thence moved to Warren County, and again opened out a farm right from the woods, and thus did a double pioneer work. Now this country presents a great contrast--fine farms and elegant buildings have taken the place of the vast forests, and the log cabins are almost extinct, and this change has all been made by these noble pioneers, whose memory should be embalmed in the hearts of their descendants for all time to come. The subject of this sketch grew to manhood, and remained with his father till 33 years of age; was married Sept. 15, 1864, to Hannah A., daughter of Nathan and Rachel Bean, natives of Frederick County, Va., but who emigrated to Ohio in 1841, and resided in Clinton County, till the death of Mrs. Bean, March 4, 1853. They had eight children--James W., Mary Eliza; Edith C., now Mrs. Duncan; Harriet C., now Mrs. Markland; Hannah A.; Sarah F., now Mrs. Wilson Harlan; Rebecca V., now Mrs. Williamson, living in Butler County,; and Rachel E. The first four reside in Kansas, and the others in Ohio. Mr. Bean removed to Kansas, where he died Sept. 2, 1873. Mar. Harlan and wife have one child--May, born May 1, 1866. Mr. Harlan has always followed farming, and all within Massie Township; he bought and located upon the place where he now lives, in the spring of 1870, and where he has since resided. Mr. Harlan is a member of the Orthodox Society of Friends; is on among the prominent farmers of Massie Township, and one of its best citizens. [Source: "The History of Warren County, Ohio". Sarah was less than three years old when her father died. She does not remember him. She graduated from Springboro High School With Honors, having lived her junior and senior years with Mrs. Nancy Maltbie, an aged inhabitant. For this she received 50 cents per week which provided her school supplies.

She received a Teaching Certificate after graduation and taught four years in two country schools - Salem and Woodgrove, each with over 60 pupils in eight grades. She could then help her mother with home expenses.

Harry and Sarah were parents of seven children. they reared their children on the farm. Sarah gardened, cooked, canned, fed hired hands and managed her large household with love, concern and quiet confidence. Harry's untimely death at age 54 years left Sarah with two young sons to manage the farm. The oldest son, Maurice, a test-pilot at Aeronica Aircraft, Middleton, Ohio was killed in a test flight three months later. The youngest son joined the U. S. Air Force during the Korea War. The second youngest son, Carl, married. This left Sarah to manage alone which she did in an admirable and successful manner with the help of good neighbors and her married children. A new threat arrived with the construction of a super-highway, I-75 which was to envelop her farm. Soon after, she and sister Anna moved to Springboro and retired there.

Sarah was an excellent manager with the gift of positive thinking and a solid religious faith that enriched her life, keeping her young at heart and a respected, loved person.

Sarah was an unusually generous person with her family, neighbors and friends. Those who had need of a meal or a home always found her offering to share. she remained the confidante and advisor to her children much as her own mother had been to her large family. Second Degree Murder
Charge Under Which Ed. Colvin is Bound Over to Grand Jury.
The preliminary examination of E. Colvin, who fatally shot Charles Colvin Jan. 14, was held before Mayor Morrow in the court house last Thursday and resulted in the accused being held to the Grand Jury under bond of $5,000 with Gilbert Holmes, J. M. Hughey, H. C. Dawson, O.l S. Lemon and James G. Lyle as bondsmen.
Taylor Bennington, Wilbert Colvin, Drs. Larkin and Glenn, Merchant's Policeman Roush, Siegel Shaw, Kirby Raines, M. H. Weddling and Misses Rosa King and Lillian Ambrose were called to testify as to the circumstances of the shooting, but little if anything, was developed that had not already been told in these columns. Excitement over the affair has died out somewhat, and there will probably be little heard of it until the Grand Jury acts. Han. Ulric Sloane, I. McD. and Col. D. Q. Morrow represented the defense and Hon. H. A. Pavey assisted the prosecution.
