OBITUARY
DEATH OF "ISA" LEETH
Well Known Paulding Young Lady Passed Over.
...Isadore Leeth, daughter of Darius and Mary A. Leeth, was born in Harrison township, Paulding county, March 10, 1884; died in Paulding, Ohio, Feb. 19, 1909, aged 34 years, 11 months and 9 days.
...Her family moved to Paulding when Judge Leeth assumed the duties of Probate Judge, where she attended school, leaving the high school to do office work for her father. In the fall of 1904 she entered the Tri-State College at Angola and finished a business course, returning home in the summer of 1905. She was baptized and received into the First Methodist Episcopal church, Paulding, January 17, 1909.
...Her health began to fail in Feb. Of 1908, and for a year she was a constant and patient sufferer until relieved of her pain last Friday morning by the Father of mercy and love. Her mother, three sisters and three brothers survive her, her father and one brother having preceded her to the home above.
...The facts which are here recorded do not hold the secret of this life of four and twenty years. The rich beauty of this life is not found in externalities, but in its inward graces. It is the soul that speaks to us and gives to us a vision of eternal things. The unseen things of her christian faith took from death its sting, and from the grave its victory. During the months of her sickness there was crystalized in her soul-a most beautiful Christian experience. Her reception into the church was preceded by the knowledge that Christ had personally saved her, and by the resignation born of the Spirit in the soul. She experienced religious truth and felt its mighty power in her life. She percieved __?__ with spiritual insight and understood the Spirit message to her failing strength, Christ __?__ as a fragrant flower and Heaven was a possession of her soul before the angels bore her immortal spirit home to God.
...Her christian experience gave to her failing strength an eternal beauty. It was eternal certainty that spoke, not wan cheeks. It was the voice of the soul that gave to her pale face a glow so hopeful and luminous as to make one forget that the silver cord of her life was being loosened and the golden bowl broken. It gave to her youthful life the beauty of resignation. It enabled her to surrender a life full of comforts and friends and youthful joys without a murmur or sigh. Before the icy hand of death laid its power upon the full bloom of her life, it was surrendered to God. The Christ of Calvary was her reward. Death was a welcome messenger and was the angel spirit that bore her to that New Country, that is, an heavenly.
...The funeral service was held at the Methodist Episcopal Church, Paulding, O., Sunday afternoon at 3:30, conducted by Rev. W. T. Stockstill, assisted by Rev. J. G. Grabiel. Her body was laid to rest in Live Oak cemetery at sunset, as requested by the deceased.

OBITUARY
Death of a Pioneer -- One by one, and rapidly, the pioneers are passing away. On the 6th of July Mrs. Abigail Benham, wife of Mr. John Benham, of Centerville, in this county, closed her mortal career, at the ripe age of seventy-eight years. About eleven years ago she was struck with the palsy, and during that long period she was confined to her room--an almost helpless invalid. The maiden name of Mrs. Benham was Abigail Nutt. She was born in New Jersey, October 24, 1790. Her parents emigrated to Kentucky, then a wilderness, in 1796, and kept a public house at Dry Ridge.
—In 1800 they removed to Centerville, Ohio, and there, at the age of fourteen years, Abigail married John Benham. Her wedded life thus continued during a period of sixty-four years. She was the mother of fifteen children, now living. Her grand children number seventy-two; great grand-children, forty-one; great great grand, one. Her funeral took place on the 7th of July. The sermon on the occasion was preached by a member of the Society of Friends, her parents having been members of that denomination. OBITUARY
Died at Noon Last Friday and Buried on Sunday.
...John Leeth was born in Paulding County, Ohio, October 5, 1876, and departed this life in the town of Paulding February 24, 1905, aged 28 years, 4 months and 19 days. His boyhood was spent upon the farm, but about 12 years ago he came to Paulding and has resided here most of the time since. For several years he acted as Deputy clerk in Probate Court and performed the duties of the office with perfect efficiency and with satisfaction to all concerned. On the 14th of May, 1908, he was married to Lela Barber. The beautiful dream of long years of health and domestic bliss so natural to the newly wedded, and in this case anticipated by all, was never to be realized. A few short months passed by and then health failed and a change of climate was sought in hope of recovery. This was only partial when he returned after a three months stay in the mountains of the far west. Again last July in the hope of prolonging his life he once more sought the light air of the high altitudes but only to meet with disappointment for he steadily declined in strength until three weeks ago when he returned to Paulding almost in a dying condition.
...About four months ago he resolved in his heart to accept Christ as his Savior. Since then according to his own testimony he has made a constant effort to live acceptable to God. In his last days he expressed perfect trust in his Savior and declared he was ready to depart this life at any time the summons might come. With this testimony on his lips and in his dying moments a prayer to the Heavenly Father to receive him he has gone from us and entered "That bourne from which no traveller returned."
...Besides his immediate relatives a large circle of friends will mourn his premature death. Perhaps the largest congregation that ever gathered in the Methodist church to attend a funeral service assembled there Sabath afternoon to pay a last tribute of respect to him. After the service, which was conducted by Rev. J. A. Hoffman, the remains were laid to rest in Live Oak cemetery.

CARD OF THANKS
God in his infinite wisdome has seen fit to call our relative unto himself and we bow in humble submission to His will knowing that all he does is for the best. In our sad hour many friends and neighbors assisted us and also tendered words of sympathy. In return for all this we wish, in our weak way, to make partial amends by tendering them our most heartfelt sympathy. That God may ever be merciful unto them for their kindness toward us is our earnest

OBITUARY
George W. Beck
...Soon after the evening shadows had gathered on Wednesday, March 19, 1919, the earthly career of George W. Beck came to a close, and the heart that had palpitated with life for 71 years and more was now still forever in death. He was the oldest son of Rev. Francis H. and Amelia Beck whose family consisted of 7 children, 3 of whom died in early childhood. Of the four, who lived to manhood and womanhood years, George is the first to be called. He was born in Montgomery county, Ohio, August 8, 1847, but in his early childhood his parents moved to Shelby county. Within a few years they returned to Montgomery county and after tarrying there a few brief years they purchased for themselves a home where Kessler now stands in 1869 and that became their permanent residence.
...In that same year George began his long career as a school teacher and he continued to prosecute his school work for forty-three years in succession. His rectitude of character and lofty ideals were powerful factors in the success he achieved in his long tenure of service. Not only did he train the youthful minds of his pupils, but what noble impulses be awakened in the hearts of the children entrusted to his care! By word and deed he sought to guide their young feet aright. He gave encouragement and kindly assistance to many as they left the school room to begin their careers in life. Many are the parents who have great reason for genuine gratitude to the deceased for the faithful service he rendered to their boy or their girl. In his honest, rugged face there was reflected the spirit of friendly interest as he came in contact with them whether in the school-room, or on the play ground. And a genial, whole-hearted greeting was accorded them as he met them along the highway of life.
...Nor were his public activities confined to his chosen field of teaching in the public schools. In 1866, while yet in his teens, he became a member of the Sugar Grove Christian church near Fidelity under the labors of Rev. William Jay. More than thirty years ago he transferred his membership to the West Union Christian church and continued in its fellowship until the end came. He served as a trustee of the church for many years and where he could no longer attend to the duties of the office on account of failing health he was made trustee emeritus. During those years he was active in the Sunday School work and was the faithful teacher of the young mens class for many years.
...He became a member of the I. O. O. F. At West Milton in April 189_ and at his own request the lodge rendered its impressive burial service over his remains. He became a member, also, of the Masonic Fraternity at West Milton and was raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason in 1902.
...On August 4, 1874, the deceased was united in marriage with Mary Florence Miller who stood by his side for 31 years and more as the inspiration of his life. Compelled to be absent from home much of his time by his chosen profession she bravely assumed the cares and duties of the home and by her faithfulness and industry and devotion, she rendered possible the success he achieved as a public school teacher. Her home was the throne of her power. For it she lived and planned and wrought. Four little tiny girls came into their home, May, Mattie, Clara and Minni. Mattie died in infancy. The other three grew to womanhood years and survive the father. May became the wife of Arthur Patty, Clara was wedded to Roy hale, and Minnie has been the bright light in the home of Theodore Macy as the companion of his life. The mother passed away March 30, 1906.
...In December, 1912 Mr. Beck was again joined in marriage with Mrs. Mary McCool who died in 1916 and he was again left to journey alone upon life's highway. But he was comforted with the love and companionship of his children with whom he found a congenial home. They cared for him, ministered to him during his long affliction and at last, on March 19, 1919, he passed away from the home of his daughter May, at the age of 71 years, 7 months and 11 days.
...Besides his children he leaves eight grandchildren, two brothers J. Warren and Albert, and one sister Mary Jane Beck, to whom his departure brings a sense of loss and sorrow not to be expressed in words.
...Funeral was held Friday at 2:30 p. m., at the West Union Christian church, Roy O. P. Furnas officiating. (Source: Troy-Hayner Genealogy and History Center, Troy, Ohio, copy in file)

OBITUARY
God is love: his mercy brightens
All he path in which he rove:
Bliss he wakes and woes he lightens:
God is wisdom, God is love.

Chance and change are busy ever:
Man decays, and ages move:
But His mercy waneth never
God is wisdom, God is love.

...Freelove Elizabeth Walls, daughter of Elijah and Harriett Willis was born in Pee Pee township, Pike County, Ohio, on April 3rd in the year of 1879. She departed this life August 26, 1952 at the age of 73 years, four months and twenty-three days. Her death was brought about through an accidental fall from a ladder as she was attempting to pick peaches.
...In the year of 1903 in the month of July, she was united in marriage to Grandville Walls. He was the son of pioneer parents who came to Pike County early in its history from the states of Delaware and New Hampshire. To this union there were born the following surviving children:
...Herby L. Walls, Columbus, Ohio; Virginia Snyder, Washington, C. H., Ohio; Patricia Ann Custer, Washington, C. H., Ohio; Evelyn L. Brooks, Columbus, Ohio; Mary E. Barber, of Chillicothe, Ohio. One child, Clarence L. Walls died in infancy. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
...Into this great adventure called life -Lizzie, as she was commonly known, brought a rich endowment of courage, industry, and wisdom. To friends and neighbors in sickness or distress she was a devoted servant, ever ready to meet the call of the hour, day or night. She has wrought well in the vineyard of life, striving through the years with her helpmate to bring forth from the stubborn soil the substance of life.
...She was deeply devoted to her husband and her children; ever ready to make such sacrifices as only a wife and mother can and will make. Today they gather around her bier with contrite hearts and broken emotions at her passing. The years will soften their grief, but the memory of her will never fade. As her star goes down beneath the horizon of the living, can we not say in the beautiful lines of the poet:

There is no death! The stars go down
To rise upon some other shore.
And bright in Heaven's jewelled crown
They shine for ever more.

There are no dead! They have but passed
Beyond the mists that blind us here
Into the new and larger life
Of the serener sphere.

And ever near us, though unseen
The dear immortal spirits tread
For all the boundless universe
Is life--there are no dead.

OBITUARY
Jane Knife
...As the sun was lighting up the eastern horizon on Wednesday morning, October 15, 1919, the venerable Jane Knife breathed her life peacefully away at the age of 80 years, 7 months and 20 days.
...She was the daughter of Enoch and Hannah Coppock Pearson, and one of the family of twelve children. Only two of his children are living, Enoch and Nathaniel, both of Indiana. She was born February 25, 1839. On February 8, 1855, she was united in marriage with David Knife, who passed away January 18, 1890. To them were given five children, four of whom are living, namely, Mrs. Elizabeth Shrader of Tippecanoe City; Mrs. Ella Vore, east of West Milton; Charlie Knife, who lived on the old homestead, and Mrs. Cora Cress, near Kessler. There are twenty-one grandchildren, thirty-six great grandchildren and one great grandchild.
...In their early married life Mr. and Mrs. Knife both united with the old Fidelity Christian Church near teir home. After the West Union Christian church was organized the deceased transferred her membership to this church and remained in its fellowship until the end came. For many years she was a faithful member of the Mite society of the church and was deeply interested in its work. When the 30th anniversary of the church was celebrated last June she sat upon the platform with the other members of the society during the services.
...There was a powerful influence for good the flowed from her quiet, modest life that was deeply felt by all who knew her. Her whole life stood for things noble and true. Her convictions of right and duty were strong and from them she could not be easily moved. Her kind, pleasing ways endeared her to those about her. She loved her home and lived for her loved ones, no sacrifice being too great for her to make in their behalf.
...For many years she was afflicted but she bore her sufferings so patiently that but few otside her immediate family knew that she was a constant sufferer. During the last year she failed gradually but steadily but she bore her affliction with the utmost patience and fortitude. Her children with their families tenderly cared for her and ministered to her needs. As she realized that the end was near she assured her loved ones that she was ready and was looking forward with great joy the hour when she should enter into her rest. In her departure a noble mother and sister has been taken from her loved ones, who in every walk of life exemplified the beauty and charm of consecrated womanhood. Of her it can be truly said, "She hath done what she could." She now leaves to her loved ones a noble heritage of good deeds and kind words as the fruits of an untiring life of devotion to the highest principlesof truth and righteousness that dominated her whole life.
...For 51 years and more she lived in the home where she breathed her last. What sacred associations cluster about the old family home with its enduring ties of love and friendship! How few now remain who were her associates in early life! Only one, indeed, of all that number still survives and he stands like a great oak alone in what was once a great forest.
...But in giving them adieu we are grateful to our Heavenly Father for having given us such lives of blessing and benediction.
...The funeral services were held from the West Union church last Friday afternoon and interment was in the cemetery there. Rev. O. P. Furnas was in charge of the funeral

...We desire to express our sincere thanks to the neighbors and friends for their kindness and
sympathy in the illiness and death of our mother. The Family (The West Milton Record, October 22, 1919 Page 9)
