Mary A. Hormell.
Daughter of James T. and Mary Newport, was born near Lebanon, December 5, 1827, departed this life November 29, 1915 aged 87 years 11 months and 20 days. She was united in marriage to Jarias Hormell February 15, 1848. They were blessed with two children Joseph C. Hormell who died January 20, 1893, and Mrs. Sarah L. Bell who survives her together with nine grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, one sister and one brother and a number of more distant relatives. Mary united with the Christian or Newlight church of Leland in 1858 which she never changed her membership, although while able attended churches and Sabbath schools. She has been an invalid for over five years, bearing her affliction with great Christian fortitude. She was tenderly cared for by her daughter and husband, daughter-in-law and grand daughters. A kind mother. She passed away at the home of Sarah L. Bell.

Notes:

Born in February of 1800, shortly after his parents settled themselves on the farm north of Lebanon, Ohio , he grew up learning what it took to survive successfully in the new Ohio lands. In 1822 he married Nancy Coleman and they built their lives together farming on the Hormel land. Unfortunately, Joseph was never allowed to see his family grow up for on May 19, 1838, he died.

Since Nancy had her small children to care for, and since the rest of the Hormel family had their farms to take care of, there was no way she could carry on the farming chores. Therefore, the farm animals and much of the means for farming had to be sold. On June 8, 15, and 22 of 1838 the following sale notice appeared in the "Western Star":

"PUBLIC SALE
On Tuesday the 26th of June there will be offered at public sale on the premises of the late Joseph Hormel, Dec., two and a half miles north of Lebanon, the following described chattel property to wit; - 2 head of horses, 5 milch cows, 3 steers and several head of young cattle, 70 head of hogs, 20 head of sheep, 7 acres of wheat in the ground, 30 acres of corn in the ground, 12 acres of grass, one two horse wagon & harness, one windmill, 2 plows, household & kitchen furniture and a variety of articles not here mentioned. Sale to commence at 10 O'clock. A liberal credit will be given but terms more particularly made known on the day of the sale."

Joseph had become a part of one of the most famous farm enterprises for its day in Warren County,..... Hog raising. During the first part of the 19th century, Warren County, was known as one of the hog breeding centers of the nation. 1838 was doubly a sad year on Nancy because she not only lost her husband, but also her youngest son, two year old Joseph on August 20th.

After Joseph Hormel's death, his wife and six children were left to live from his estate. Since Nancy could neither read nor write well enough to take care of things, the children were put under the guardianship of Mr. Joel A. Stokes who took care of the financial affairs until each child became of age. It seems that at least some of the children were boarded out to help pay for their rearing. However, Nancy evidently continued to live on the farm that the children were to receive as their inheritance from their grandfather John Hormell, Jr.. Nancy had to sign for all money released which she did with her "X". Also in 1842, she authorized payment in June for $145.00 for boarding, washing, lodging and clothing for the preceding year, part of which time the children were in school, and part of which they were at home sick.

Thus Nancy lived out the rest of her life, raising her children as best she could by boarding them out where they worked for part of their keep and by share cropping the farm lands. In 1852, she sold 53 acres of her land along the Dayton-Lebanon Pike for $1,300.00 and by these various means, she made ends meet until her children were old enough to care for themselves and for her. By the 1850's, her children were grown, had received their inheritance, were getting married, and could fend for themselves.

Actually, Nancy Coleman had not had a very easy life down through the years. Her father, John Coleman, was descended from a German family, and her mother, Margaret Savage, was the daughter of a family from Wales. In 1821, the family left Pennsylvania and came down the Ohio River on a raft to Cincinnati, 497 miles from Pittsburgh. The Coleman's moved first to Lebanon where they lived for one year before settling north of town with their five children, Joseph, Nancy, John, Aza, and Josiah. We know from the type of materials and animals leased to John and Margaret Coleman in the Hormel estate inventory that they worked for John, Sr.. Perhaps they were a type of tenant farmer for the Hormell's. Nancy's parents were buried in the Kirby Cemetery. John died on July 12, 1830 at the age of 59 years, 9 months, and 20 days. Notes:

John Hormell, Jr. was one of the first settlers in Warren County, Ohio. He left Pennsylvania for the Ohio frontier in September 1796, and moved to Warren County, in the month of June 1798. After all the confusion over land ownership was cleared up and John Sr., finally received clear title to his land, John Jr., was able to buy his first 171 acres in 1805 for $500. In 1814 he bought another 102 acres from his father for $1000. After his father's death, he inherited another 125 acres in 1824, which he claimed adjoining his original 171 acres. John Jr. and Rachel Blair raised their family on their 398 acre farm. He saw the founding of Lebanon in 1802 and the building of route 48 past his farm.

On June 12, 1812, Congress declared war on Great Britain. William H. Harrison, who later became the ninth president of the United States, was commissioned to lead the troops from Cincinnati up to Lebanon where he added the Warren Co. regulars to his every growing army. From Lebanon, the army marched north on Rt. 48 toward Dayton and finally on to Canada. It is said that people ran for a mile or more through the woods and over the fields to see this great spectacle. Perhaps some of the Hormel family saw General Harrison ride by on his stately horse at the head of his army of volunteers at the beginning of the War of 1812.

In referring to the roster of 1812 veterans, we see that John Hormell (Hormel) served under Capt. John Patterson from July 6th to July 23rd in 1814.

Sadness also was a part of John, Jr.'s life. Before his death, he saw three of his children pass away; Lydia, Amy in 1835, and Joseph in May, 1838. Less than a year later, John, Jr. passed away on his farm. Rachell Blair Hormell lived for eight more years and died also on the farm on January 27, 1847. They are both buried in the Kirby Cemetery across the road from their land.

Perhaps the finest evidence of the respect and honor the community accorded to him was found in
"The Western Star", Lebanon's newspaper. Here below is what the editors had to say about him on February 1, 1839:

OBITUARY
DIED - Near this place, on Wednesday the 23rd of January, Mr. John Hormel, age 73. Mr. Hormel came to Warren county in the month of June, 1798, and has resided here ever since. He has ever sustained the character of a good citizen, being regarded by his friends as a quiet, upright, unobtrusive and honest man. He was a believer in Christ and died in the full hope of a glorious immortality beyond the grave. We part with an old, true and steadfast friend of the Western Star. He saw the first paper struck off, nearly thirty-two years ago, and from that period to his death he has been a regular subscriber, invariably

John Jr. settled on a farm about three miles north of Lebanon, called the Bundy farm. He died there as did his wife also and they are both buried in a little grave yard near the creek on the same farm. After John Jr's death his farm was sold to a Mr. Thompson. [Source: H. H. John married Rachel Blair in 1788 in Washington County, Pennsylvania, United States. Rachel was born on 23 May 1769 in England, United Kingdom; died on 25 Jan 1847 in Turtlecreek Township, Warren County, Ohio, United States; was buried in Jan 1847 in Warren County, Ohio, United States.
