A serious infectious illness early in his childhood caused speech difficulties and stuttering. Teachers preferred that he did not attend school. Most were not trained to correct speech problems in those days. His mother instructed him in arithmetic and money handling. Many people in Springboro depended on Louis to do their garden work and many outdoor chores regularly. His mother's homemade bread and a glass of milk was a special delight to him. His brother Maurice often took him to see his favorite Cincinnati Reds Baseball Team play at Old Crosley Field in Cincinnati. He was an avid fan via radio.

One faithful friend and follower was his collie dog, Lassie. Louis was born, lived, loved and died in the family farm home. Death occurred at age 73 years. [Source: Laura E. Notes:

Joseph Courtland Hormell was born in New Baltimore, Greene County, Ohio. His father, Jarius Hormell, died when Courtland and his sister, Sarah, were young children. They were reared by their mother, a seamstress, who lived in the Springboro-Lebanon area. Jospeh Courtland was an affectionate, kind, easy going man. He was tall, slender and had the bluest-of-blue eyes - characteristic that was carried over to some of his children and grandchildren.

Joseph Courtland assisted his uncle in the grocery throughout his lifetime. Together they were successful business men. In addition, Joseph tended their 18 acre farm. His early death occurred at a time when he was so greatly needed by Evaline and their children.

Joseph and Courtland had only a few precious years together after their marriage. these were years when their large family was arriving and requiring a mother's constant attention and a father's daily efforts to support their family. His unexpected death occurred when the oldest living child, Eleanor, was barely 14 years of age. There were nine younger children, the youngest of whom, Courtland II, was not yet born. None of the children were old enough to remember their father well and some not at all. [Source: Laura E. 2. 3.  Evaline Hayner was born on 23 Jan 1856 in Springboro, Warren County, Ohio, United States; died on 19 Feb 1933 in Clear Creek Township, Warren County, Ohio, United States; was buried in Feb 1933 in Springboro, Warren County, Ohio, United States.

    Other Events:

    • Census: 1860, Springboro, Warren County, Ohio, United States; as Evaline Hayner, in the household of William F. Hayner
    • Census: 1930, Clear Creek Township, Warren County, Ohio, United States; as Eva Hormell, widow, farmer, head of household

    Notes:

Evaline Hayner was the second child of William Frederick and Sarah Oakley Hayner. With thick bronze-red hair, a fair complexion and brown eyes, Evaline was a beautiful, attractive, spirited young woman. She possessed a keen sense of humor and loved life. She was especially talented with the needle and thread and could fashion almost anything without a pattern using an innate sense of line and proportion. In her young girlhood she was employed in the millinery shop of Amanda Newport in Springboro. She made her own clothes and hats as well as helping her mother sew the clothing for other family members.

While working in the millinery shop, Evaline met and fell in love with Joseph Courtland Hormell. He was employed in the grocery owned by his uncle William Newport, Amanda's husband. When Evaline was 21 years of age and Courtland 29, they were married.

For a short time after their marriage, Evaline and Courtland lived in Springboro where their first two children were born. They later purchased an 18 acre farm on the Lower Springboro Road bordering the eastern edge of the town. It was here that their other nine children were born and where Evaline lived for the remainder of her life.

With a happy beginning for a promising married life, sorrow began soon with the death from pneumonia of their first-born child, Freddie. Evaline never ceased to mourn the death of this little fair, red-haired child. She went on however and during the next sixteen Years, ten more children came to share their home and fireside. Then, with little provocation, Joseph Courtland died, after a brief illness from pneumonia following measles - six months before the birth of their youngest child. this tragedy left Evaline all alone. Her only income resource was the 18 acre farm with which to feed, clothe and house, and educate her family. A small portion of the land was planted in tobacco each year for cash; enough in corn and wheat to trade for flour and meal and feed the farm animals; chickens were raised for eggs; a cow or two for milk, butter and cheese; a hog for meat. This income along with a large vegetable garden was to do for ten growing children. Her skill with the needle fashioned and re-fashioned their clothes, most of which she did after the children were in bed at night.

This remarkable, courageous lady accepted her responsibility, planned, managed and kept the family together bringing all of them to maturity. She had superb health, a strong will, and intellectual fortitude that served her in an unbelievable manner. In lighter moments her girlhood spirit and sense of humor shone through in spite of her many hard tasks. She was uncomplaining and went about her responsibility with a noble sense of duty and remarkable magnanimity. As the children became old enough, she called upon them to help her. This they did with the spirit with which she imbued them, keeping the total family needs in mind and retaining a loyal and high respect for the counsel and love of their mother.

Tragedy followed Evaline into the later years of her life when in 1913, her youngest child, Joseph Courtland II, not yet 20 years of age and in 1927, her promising young practising lawyer son, William, died of Tuberculosis. She cared for both of these children during their final illnesses. Ten years later, in 1937, Maurice, a successful businessman, was killed in an automobile accident caused by a drunken driver. She accepted these deep hurts with equanimity. She was strong in so many ways - physically, mentally, philosophically, and spiritually. We are reminded of a similar personality of a Hayner woman, Rosina Ortlieb Hainer, in the sixteenth century.

At the age of 77 years, Evaline's heart could no longer support her needs and she calmly and quietly and quickly passed to her eternal rest. She left a pattern of supreme greatness and strength of character for her family and friends to emulate. Few are called upon to endure the hardships, supply the basic needs of a large family alone, maintain their health to maturity and her own until death, and hold the spiritual trust of family and friends as was Evaline Hayner Hormell. She gave a full measure of devotion to them to her life's end.

Both Evaline and Courtland are buried in the Springboro, Warren County, Ohio Cemetery. 1. 8.  Joseph Hormel was born in Feb 1800 in Warren County, Ohio, United States (son of John Hormell, Jr. and Rachel Blair); died on 19 May 1838 in Warren County, Ohio, United States; was buried in May 1838 in Warren County, Ohio, United States.

    Notes:

Born in February of 1800, shortly after his parents settled themselves on the farm north of Lebanon, Ohio , he grew up learning what it took to survive successfully in the new Ohio lands. In 1822 he married Nancy Coleman and they built their lives together farming on the Hormel land. Unfortunately, Joseph was never allowed to see his family grow up for on May 19, 1838, he died.

Since Nancy had her small children to care for, and since the rest of the Hormel family had their farms to take care of, there was no way she could carry on the farming chores. Therefore, the farm animals and much of the means for farming had to be sold. On June 8, 15, and 22 of 1838 the following sale notice appeared in the "Western Star":

    "PUBLIC SALE
On Tuesday the 26th of June there will be offered at public sale on the premises of the late Joseph Hormel, Dec., two and a half miles north of Lebanon, the following described chattel property to wit; - 2 head of horses, 5 milch cows, 3 steers and several head of young cattle, 70 head of hogs, 20 head of sheep, 7 acres of wheat in the ground, 30 acres of corn in the ground, 12 acres of grass, one two horse wagon & harness, one windmill, 2 plows, household & kitchen furniture and a variety of articles not here mentioned. Sale to commence at 10 O'clock. A liberal credit will be given but terms more particularly made known on the day of the sale."

Joseph had become a part of one of the most famous farm enterprises for its day in Warren County,..... Hog raising. During the first part of the 19th century, Warren County, was known as one of the hog breeding centers of the nation. It was south of Lebanon that the Poland-China hog was developed and later distributed throughout the USA. [Source: Stanley Wright Aultz, "Chronicles of a Griffis Family". Miamisburg, Ohio: S. W. Joseph married Nancy Coleman on 20 Jul 1822 in Warren County, Ohio, United States. Nancy was born about 20 Feb 1802 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, United States; died on 8 Aug 1879 in Clear Creek Township, Warren County, Ohio, United States; was buried in Aug 1879 in Warren County, Ohio, United States. 2. 9.  Nancy Coleman was born about 20 Feb 1802 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, United States; died on 8 Aug 1879 in Clear Creek Township, Warren County, Ohio, United States; was buried in Aug 1879 in Warren County, Ohio, United States.

    Other Events:

    • Census: 1840, Turtlecreek Township, Warren County, Ohio, United States
    • Census: 1850, Turtlecreek Township, Warren County, Ohio, United States; as Nancy Hormel, head of household
    • Census: 1860, Clear Creek Township, Warren County, Ohio, United States; as Nancy Hormel, in the household of Joel Hormel
    • Will: 5 Aug 1879, Warren County, Ohio, United States
    • Probate: 30 Aug 1879, Warren County, Ohio, United States

    Notes:

1838 was doubly a sad year on Nancy because she not only lost her husband, but also her youngest son, two year old Joseph on August 20th.

After Joseph Hormel's death, his wife and six children were left to live from his estate. Since Nancy could neither read nor write well enough to take care of things, the children were put under the guardianship of Mr. Joel A. Stokes who took care of the financial affairs until each child became of age. It seems that at least some of the children were boarded out to help pay for their rearing. However, Nancy evidently continued to live on the farm that the children were to receive as their inheritance from their grandfather John Hormell, Jr.. Nancy had to sign for all money released which she did with her "X". Also in 1842, she authorized payment in June for $145.00 for boarding, washing, lodging and clothing for the preceding year, part of which time the children were in school, and part of which they were at home sick.

Thus Nancy lived out the rest of her life, raising her children as best she could by boarding them out where they worked for part of their keep and by share cropping the farm lands. In 1852, she sold 53 acres of her land along the Dayton-Lebanon Pike for $1,300.00 and by these various means, she made ends meet until her children were old enough to care for themselves and for her. By the 1850's, her children were grown, had received their inheritance, were getting married, and could fend for themselves.

Actually, Nancy Coleman had not had a very easy life down through the years. Her father, John Coleman, was descended from a German family, and her mother, Margaret Savage, was the daughter of a family from Wales. In 1821, the family left Pennsylvania and came down the Ohio River on a raft to Cincinnati, 497 miles from Pittsburgh. The Coleman's moved first to Lebanon where they lived for one year before settling north of town with their five children, Joseph, Nancy, John, Aza, and Josiah. We know from the type of materials and animals leased to John and Margaret Coleman in the Hormel estate inventory that they worked for John, Sr.. Perhaps they were a type of tenant farmer for the Hormell's. Nancy's parents were buried in the Kirby Cemetery. John died on July 12, 1830 at the age of 59 years, 9 months, and 20 days. Margaret died on July 18, 1855 at the age of 79 years, 10 months, and 24 days. [Source: Stanley Wright Aultz, "Chronicles of a Griffis Family". Miamisburg, Ohio: S. W. Aultz 1981]
