In the name of God, Amen I Christian Gatz of Frederick County in the state of Maryland being sick and weak in body, but of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding, considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof, and being desirous to settle my worldly affairs, and thereby be the better prepared to leave this world when it shall pleas God to call me hence do therefore make and publish this my last will and testament, in manner and form following, that is to say.
First and principally I commit my soul unto the hands of Almighty God, and my body to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my administrator herein after named, and after my debts and funeral
charges are paid and my wifes thirds taken out, I devise and bequeath as follows.
Item I give and bequeath unto Mary Ann Gatz my dear wife all and singular my real estate that is to say one tract of land cald hide and seek also one other tract or parcel of land calld Brues Misfortune also one other tract or parcel cawled timber plenty also one tract or parcel cawled Burnes Range all lying and being in Frederick County and the state of Maryland, in short all the Estate that I now posses in any manner shape or form whatsoever to her Mary Ann Gatz my dear wife as aforesaid, also all my household stuff and furniture of every description and stock of all kinds whatsoever and all farming emprements of every description, in short, that is to say all my real and personal estate that I now possess in any manner shape or form whatsoever, to have and to hold the same and all the profits derived there from so long as she lives and remains in her widdohood, but if she marries and breaks her widdowhood then all the forgoing estate boath real personal and mixed to be sold and equally divided between my foure children to wit my daughter Roseannah wife of Charles Shrader, my son Christian Gatz, my son William Gatz and my son Jacob Gatz equal shear and shear alike, and lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my dear wife Mary Ann to be executrix and my much esteemed friend Christian Hauver to be sole executors of this my last will and testament revoking and annulling former wills by me heretofore made ratifying and confirming this and none other to be my last will and testament.

Whereas I Christian Gatz of Federick County and state of Maryland have made and duly executed my last will and testament in writing bearing date the twentieth day of November in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and forty four, which said last will and testament and every clause, bequest and devise therein contained, I do hereby ratify and confirm, saving and expecting such clause, bequest and devise therein mentioned as are by me herein after revoked and made void and being desirous to alter some part thereof and making additions thereto do therefore hereby make this my codicil, which I will and direct shall be taken and held as part of my said wil and testament, in manner and form following that is to say, whareas by my said will I did give and bequeath to my daughter Rosannah wife of Charles Shroder equeal share and shear alike with my sons now I do hereby revoke the said legacy and bequeath, and do give unto my said daughter Rosannah wife of Charles Shroder just half as much as my said sons in lieu thereof and no more.

History / Bio:

Mt. Moriah Church is located about four miles south of Sabillesville. The first church was built of stone in 1831, when Rev. S. K. Hoshouer was pastor of the Smithsburg charge, with which it has always been connected. The cornerstone was laid June 1, 1830. Besides the pastors, Revs. H. L. Baugher, D. D., J. G. Anspach, D. D., and Rev. John Winters of the Lutheran Church, and Rev. John Reinkey of the Moravian church, took part in the religious services. it was intended to be a union church of Lutherans and Reformed. The lot for the church was donated by Mr. Geo. P. Fox, Sr., who, with Messr. Wm. Brown, St., Thomas Brown, Abraham Poorman, Christian Gates and Philip Fox were the first officers. The organization took place in 1834, during the pastorate of Rev. A. Reck, with 40 charter members, and at the same time 32 were added by confirmation.

James O. Harne purchased the adjoining farm consisting of 103 acres of excellent farm and timber land, the property known as the Old Gates Farm; Hauvers Dist.

...At the request of Christian Gates the following Bill Sale is recorded the 17th day of September 1813. Know all men by these presents that Jacob Gates of Frederick County and the state of Maryland for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars, current money to me in hand paid by Christian Gates of the county and state aforesaid, at and before the sealing and delivery hereof, the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge, have granted bargained and sold, and by these presents do grant, bargain and sell unto the said Christian Gaits his executors, administrators and afsigns one sorrel mare five years old, one ditto seven years old, one red and white cow, one buflow cow red and white, one brindle heifer, one black and white ditto, two yearling calves, three feather beds and furniture, one tin plate stove, one poplar chest, two walnut tables, four winsor chairs one large Iron Kettle, two pare of horse gears, one old waggon, one bar shear plow, one shovel ditto, three hogs and all the Kitchen furniture, six hundred chestnut rails, all which property is now in my pofsefsion, to have and to hold, the same described property above bargained and sold to the said Christian Gates his executors, administrators and afsigns forever, to his and their only proper use and benefit, and I the said Jacob Gates for myself my executors and administrators shall and will warrant and forever defend by these presents to the said Christian Gates his executors, administrators and afsigns the said described property against me my executors & administrators and against all and every other person or persons whomsoever claiming the same or any part thereof in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal the fifteenth day of September eighteen hundred and fourteen.

Know all men by these presents that I Jacob Geatz of Frederick County in the State of Maryland for and in Consideration of the sum of two hundred dollars current money to me in hand paid by John L Harding and John McPherson Jur, of the County and State aforesaid at or before the Sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged the said Jacob Geatz hath granted bargined sold and by these presents doth grant bargin and sell unto the said John L Harding and John McPherson Jur, their executors administrators & afsigns two beds and bedding, three bedsteads, five chairs, four tables, one mahagany bureau and Kitchen Cupboard, or bureau, Carpeting, pots, Kittles, pans, Knives and forks, one Cart, one gig & harnefs, tin ware, one chest, working tools and the usiders of his house lot, And Kitchen furniture.
