She was born in Crawford county, Ohio, June 15, 1841. Their family are Mary J., born April 26, 1860, wife of Wm. Buerkle, Joseph F., born Dec. 28, 1865, Clarrissa A., born Aug. 30, 1869, wife of Fred White. Adalene was born Jan. 29, 1872, wife of Christ Peterson.
—Francis Shelley served three years in the 68th Ohio during the Rebellion and was discharged at Savannah, Georgia. The home farm was across the road west of the Fred Wahl farm. Late in life Mr. Shelley bought the South Main street property of his brother-in-law Maurice Kelley. A few years ago he sold this and they moved to near Cincinnati. Mr. and Mrs. Shelley are still living. They were prominently identified with the United Brethren church.

Francis Shelley -- and Lucinda Myton were united in marriage in Allen County, Indiana, May 10, 1857. He was born in Richland County, Ohio, February 7, 1837; her birth took place in Crawford County, Ohio, June 15, 1841. Their family are: Mary J., born April 26, 1860; Joseph F., December 28, 1865; Clarissa A., August 30, 1869; Emily A. , January 29, 1872. His parents were settlers in this county in 1840; their names were Francis Shelley, died August 6, 1866, and Mary J. (Shanbarg) Shelley, who is still living in the township, aged ninety-two years. his wife's father, Robert Myton, died March 9, 1880, and her mother, Rhoda (Homon) Myton, April 26, 1873. Mr. Shelley was Supervisor for one year. He was in the war of 1861, in the 68th Ohio; served three years, being discharged in 1861, at Savannah, Georgia. His brother Henry was in the 100 days' service. Mr. and Mrs. Shelley were members of the United Brethren, and active workers in the Sunday School. He was a farmer and stock raiser. Shelley and Quince Families
Frances and Mary Jane (Shanberg) Shelley were natives of France, and members of the Catholic church. Mr. Shelley attended in Paris seven years, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Shelley were married in France and there in France were born seven children. Mary, Catherine, Mary Ann, Martha, Lovina, Henry and Victoria. Francis Jr., and Peter were born in this country. The family emigrated to America in 1831 and settled in Richland county. In 1840 the family came to Paulding county and entered 80 acres of land one mile north of Payne on north-east corner. They built their cabin where the home of Mr. Cox now stands. They lived there with their family until the death of Mr. Shelley, August 6 1866.
Mrs. Emma Bodey a grand-daughter remembers hearing them tell of the roof blowing off the cabin one night. The parents and daughters slept downstairs in the small cabin and the sons in the loft. This night a man way-farer was a guest and the boys and guest were compelled to descend quickly in abbreviated costumes. While the parents remained faithful to the Catholic faith, the children later joined the United Brethren church. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Shelley made her home with her son Henry Shelley who lived in the home at Lamb's corners and with her daughter Mrs. Quince. She died March 20, 1885, aged 94 years. Each of these sons were given on their marriage forty acres of land. Henry earned the forty acres across from the Hiram Underwood farm with the proceeds of night's coon hunting and sold it $75.00.
Mary the eldest daughter of Francis and Mary Jane Shanberg became the wife of John McGill. They lived just south of the Lehman school house south of bridge. Had no children. Catherine born in France, Sept. 8 1842, became the wife of Francis Quince in Richland county on Feb. 14, 1842. Their children were Mary died in infancy, Solomon born Nov. 5, 1845, Mary Cecil Radenbaugh born Sept. 10, 1847, Francis A., Aug. 2, 1849, died Aug. 10, 1880, Laura born July 27, 1852, died Nov. 8, 1879, Catherine born 1856, died 1860. Mary Ann married Solomon Mott of Vernon Junction, Ohio. Friends here only know of one daughter, Julia. Mrs. Mott is now living at the age of 90 years.
Martha chose for her husband, William Holmes and the family moved to Iowa, cannot ascertain names of children. Lovina married Maurice Keller and for many years lived on South Main street and built the house in which Miss Nellie Bradley lives. They had no children.
Henry Shelley was born near Paris, France, Dec. 26, 1829. He was two years of age when his parents came to this country. Henry Shelley was married three times. His first wife was Miss Abagail Chaney the daughter of Charles Chaney of this county, one son Charles was born to them. The wife died and Mr. Shelley married Miss Mahala Mikle, a sister of Daniel Mikle. Their children were Abram, Louisa the wife of L. Leeth and three deceased. Mrs. Mahala Shelley died in 1866. In 1869, Julia Myton the daughter of Robert and Rhoda Homan Myton of German lineage became the third wife. Their children were Carrie who died in 1883, Emma born May 21, 1875 and wife of Isaac Body. Victoria born Sept. 5, 1877. Ada May born May 23, 1881 and wife of George Fugate, and Lucy born June 27, 1889.
In 1864, Henry Shelley enlisted in Company H, One Hundred Sixty-second Ohio Volunteer Infantry and served 100 days. He secured his honorable discharge. The family was highly-esteemed in the community. Mrs. Shelley died January 18, 1914. Mr. Shelley died March 8, 1904.

Francis Shelley, formerly of Payne but for the past several years a resident of Bethel, O., last week had the misfortune to fall from a ladder, breaking his collar bone and otherwise bruised up. He was immediately taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. P. W. White and a physician summoned. On account of Mr. Shelly's advanced age his recovery seemed doubtful but we learn that he is now on the road to complete recovery. Mrs. Shelley has also been in poor health for some time.

Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Shelley of South Main street entertained Tuesday at a potluck dinner in honor of his father Francis Shelley's 94th birthday. As the elder Mr. Shelley is a veteran of the Civil war and former member of John Stabler Post, G. A. R. of Payne, where he spent most of his long life, all the old soldiers that were able to come were invited to the celebration. The rooms were beautifully decorated for the occasion with Old Glory.. Patriotic music was also enjoyed in the afternoon and evening and all who attended had a most pleasant time. The host and several veterans all drove to the home of Dr. H. Radenbaugh who has been confined to his bed for the past several weeks. Dr. Radenbaugh was very much pleased by the visit of his comrades. Mr. Francis Shelley in whose honor this happy event took place, is at the home of his daughter Mrs. Fred White at Milan, Mich., where he has been spending several years.

Francis Shelley for many years a pioneer citizen of Benton township, but is now making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Fred White, at Milan, Mich., is here visiting at the home of his son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Shelley, of South Main street, who gave a dinner Tuesday in honor of the aged father's 94th birthday anniversary. The celebrant is a Civil war veteran a former member of John Stabler Post, G. A. R., of Payne. The home was beautifully decorated in the national colors and Old Glory flying to the breeze. A program of patriotic music and camp fire stories were greatly enjoyed. All the old soldiers able to be out wer guests, besides many near friends. Later in the afternoon, Dr. Henry Radenbaugh received a visit from his old comrades. Dr. Radenbaugh is still confined, on account of illness.

Mrs. Wm. Buerkle has gone to Milan, Mich., for a visit with her father Francis Shelley. She will also visit her sons Carl and Fred before returning home.

Obituary:

Francis Shelley was born in Richland county, O., on Feb. 7, 1834; and departed this life Friday, Jan. 8, 1832, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Clara White at Milan, Mich., aged 97 years, 11 months and 1 day. Death was due to pneumonia.
He was united in marriage to Lucinda Myton of Monroeville, Ind., on May 10 1857, making their home on a farm north of town. To this union were born four children--three daughters and one son--Mrs. Clara White of Milan, Mich., Mrs. Mary Buerkle of Payne, Mrs. Addie Peterson of Coldwater, Mich., and Joseph Shelley of Payne.
At the beginning of the Civil War in 1861 he enlisted, in the 68th regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, serving three. He was a member of General Sherman's army during his famous march to the sea.
Mrs. Shelley preceded her husband in death about eleven years ago.
Mr. Shelley united with the United Brethren church in his early manhood, and in 1921 became a member of the Methodist church.
He was president of the Washtenaw County Three Quarter Century Club at the time of his death.
He leaves to mourn his departure the four children, twenty-six grand-children, great-grand-children, great-great-grand-children, as well as several of the fifth generation.
The funeral was held Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the local Methodist church, Rev. Wayne Snider officiating and burial was made in the Lehman cemetery.
Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mrs. Clara White, Mr. and Mrs. Erwin White and children, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur White and children, Charles White and Harry Chall, all of Milan, Mich., George Solway of Dixon, O., Mr. and Mrs. Chris Peterson and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Brewer of Coldwater, Mich, Mr. and Mrs. Crowell, Mr. and Mrs. George Venorsdale, Mr. and Mrs. Art Henchen, Mrs. Helen Shelenbach, all of Fort Wayne, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Buerkle of Antwerp, O., and Mrs. S. C. McCoy of Leipsic, O.
We wish to thank our neighbors and friends who so kindly assisted us during the burial of our dear father.

The remains of a Paulding County, pioneer and Civil War veteran, the 98 year old Henry Shelley was brought here from Milan, Michigan where he had been making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Clara White, the widow of Freddie White who lived for many years on a farm about two miles south of Payne. The funeral was held at the Methodist church Monday afternoon and interment made in the Lehman cemetery. Mrs. William is also a daughter of the deceased who left many grandchildren and great-grandchildren to revere his memory.

Francis married Lucinda Myton on 10 May 1857 in Monroeville, Allen County, Indiana, United States. Mr. and Mrs. William Buerkley were called to Bethel, near Cincinnati, O, early Sunday on account of serious illness of Mrs. Buerkley,s mother, Mrs. Francis Shelley. Mrs. Shelley has been suffering for a long time from crysipitis but had been some better last week when she was taken very suddenly ill again She is now in her seventy fourth year. The Shelleys have lived here nearly a lifetime. Three years ago they moved to their new home at Bethel.

In 1869, Julia Myton the daughter of Robert and Rhoda Homan Myton of German lineage became the third wife. Their children were Carrie who died in 1883, Emma born May 21, 1875 and wife of Isaac Body. Victoria born Sept. 5, 1877. Ada May born May 23, 1881 and wife of George Fugate, and Lucy born June 27, 1889.
In 1864, Henry Shelley enlisted in Company H, One Hundred Sixty-second Ohio Volunteer Infantry and served 100 days. He secured his honorable discharge. The family was highly-esteemed in the community. Mrs. Shelley died January 18, 1914. Mr. Shelley died March 8, 1904.

Francis Shelley and Lucinda Myton a sister of the third wife of Henry Shelley were married in Allen county, Indiana, May 10, 1857. He was born in Richland county, Ohio, Feb. 7, 1837. She was born in Crawford county, Ohio, June 15, 1841. Their family are Mary J., born April 26, 1860, wife of Wm. Buerkle, Joseph F., born Dec. 28, 1865, Clarrissa A., born Aug. 30, 1869, wife of Fred White. Adalene was born Jan. 29, 1872, wife of Christ Peterson.
Francis Shelley served three years in the 68th Ohio during the Rebellion and was discharged at Savannah, Georgia. The home farm was across the road west of the Fred Wahl farm. Late in life Mr. Shelley bought the South Main street property of his brother-in-law Maurice Kelley. A few years ago he sold this and they moved to near Cincinnati. Mr. and Mrs. Shelley are still living. They were prominently identified with the United Brethren church.
Peter Shelley married Martha J. Payne in 1860. They had five sons and two daughters. We have no record of his death. Mrs. Shelley died June 23, 1917 at the age of 75 years at the home of her daughter Mrs. John H. Medsker of South Benton.

Miss Bertha Buerkle spent last week with her brother, Fred Buerkle and family and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Shelley of Columbus Grove, Ind. She reports Grandma Shelley slowly recovering.

Obituary:

Mrs. Lucinda Mythone Shelley, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Mython, was born in Crawford county, Ohio, June 15, 1841, and in early girlhood moved to Paulding county with her parents, on what has been known as the Sol Quince farm, later her parents moved to the Meade farm, in Jackson township, Allen county, Ind. She resided here when, at the age of 16, in 1857, she was married to Francis Shelley, at Monroeville, Ind. She returned with her husband to live in Harrison township, Paulding county, when there were but three dwellings in the township. The Shelleys lived in Paulding county, either in or around Payne, until about eleven years ago, when they moved to near Cincinnati, O., later moving to Columbus Grove, O., and last March coming back to Payne, where they have since made their home with their daughter, Mrs. William Buerkle, where she died early Monday morning, October 4.
Although Mrs. Shelley had been a great sufferer for many years and in feeble health, yet her death came as a great surprise to her many friends, for on October 3rd she, in company with her husband and daughter, drove to Dixon, O., to visit her sister and family, and thoroughly enjoyed the day, apparently suffering but little fatigue.
Mrs. Shelley was a true pioneer in every sense of the word -a truly industrious, courageous, loving Christian wife and mother and a truly generous, helpful neighbor.
The Shelley family consisted of the aged parents and four children Mrs. Mary Jane Buerkle of Payne, Joseph Shelley of Washington, Ind., Mrs. Clara White of Milan, Mich., and Mrs. Adaline Peterson of Bronson, Mich. The death of the mother is the break in the family circle. The decedent is survived by her three sisters, Mrs. Etta Suttor of Van Lew, O., Mrs. Levinn Solway of Dixon, O., and Mrs. Adaline Uhlenhago of Ft. Wayne, also 26 grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren. She was a faithful member of the U. B. church, but when living near Cincinnati, owing to the fact that there was no U. B. church there, she worshipped in the M. E. church, but on coming to Columbus Grove she again took up her worship in the church of her choice, the United Brethren.
Her funeral was held on Wednesday at 2 p. m., in the M. E. church. Her pastor, Rev. J. W. Shock, of Columbus Grove, O. officiated, and interment was made in the Lehman cemetery.
The pall-bearers, six grandsons, were Carl, Oscar, Frank, Fred and Henry Buerkle, and D. E. White.
Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Fred White and son Robert and D. E. White of Milan, Mich. Mr. and Mrs. Chris Peterson, of Brunson, Mich., Mr. and Mrs. Henry Buerkle, of Antwerp, Mrs. John Turner , of Jackson, Mich., Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Uhlenlage, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Venosdale, Mrs. Wm. Cowell, Mr. and Mrs. Venosdale, Misses Helen and Hazel Sheefel, all of Ft. Wayne; Mr. and Mrs. James Solway, of Dixon, O., Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Buerkle and son, of Continental, O., and Fred Buerkle, of Columbus Grove., O.

Shelley and Quince Families
Frances and Mary Jane (Shanberg) Shelley were natives of France, and members of the Catholic church. Mr. Shelley attended in Paris seven years, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Shelley were married in France and there in France were born seven children. Mary, Catherine, Mary Ann, Martha, Lovina, Henry and Victoria. Francis Jr., and Peter were born in this country. The family emigrated to America in 1831 and settled in Richland county. In 1840 the family came to Paulding county and entered 80 acres of land one mile north of Payne on north-east corner. They built their cabin where the home of Mr. Cox now stands. They lived there with their family until the death of Mr. Shelley, August 6 1866.
Mrs. Emma Bodey a grand-daughter remembers hearing them tell of the roof blowing off the cabin one night. The parents and daughters slept downstairs in the small cabin and the sons in the loft. This night a man way-farer was a guest and the boys and guest were compelled to descend quickly in abbreviated costumes. While the parents remained faithful to the Catholic faith, the children later joined the United Brethren church. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Shelley made her home with her son Henry Shelley who lived in the home at Lamb's corners and with her daughter Mrs. Quince. She died March 20, 1885, aged 94 years. Each of these sons were given on their marriage forty acres of land. Henry earned the forty acres across from the Hiram Underwood farm with the proceeds of night's coon hunting and sold it $75.00.
Mary the eldest daughter of Francis and Mary Jane Shanberg became the wife of John McGill. They lived just south of the Lehman school house south of bridge. Had no children. Catherine born in France, Sept. 8 1842, became the wife of Francis Quince in Richland county on Feb. 14, 1842. Their children were Mary died in infancy, Solomon born Nov. 5, 1845, Mary Cecil Radenbaugh born Sept. 10, 1847, Francis A., Aug. 2, 1849, died Aug. 10, 1880, Laura born July 27, 1852, died Nov. 8, 1879, Catherine born 1856, died 1860. Mary Ann married Solomon Mott of Vernon Junction, Ohio. Friends here only know of one daughter, Julia. Mrs. Mott is now living at the age of 90 years.
Martha chose for her husband, William Holmes and the family moved to Iowa, cannot ascertain names of children. Lovina married Maurice Keller and for many years lived on South Main street and built the house in which Miss Nellie Bradley lives. They had no children.
Henry Shelley was born near Paris, France, Dec. 26, 1829. He was two years of age when his parents came to this country. Henry Shelley was married three times. His first wife was Miss Abagail Chaney the daughter of Charles Chaney of this county, one son Charles was born to them. The wife died and Mr. Shelley married Miss Mahala Mikle, a sister of Daniel Mikle. Their children were Abram, Louisa the wife of L. Leeth and three deceased. Mrs. Mahala Shelley died in 1866.
