OBITUARY
VANCE, PHILIP - Philip Vance, one of Troy's best known and highly esteemed citizens, died Saturday morning at his home on South Plum street after a short illness due to paralysis and heart trouble. Mr. Vance was born Sept. 20, 1836, in York, Pa., and came to Troy many years ago. By trade he was a contractor and built many residences and other buildings in this section and by his fair dealing and honesty gained the confidence of all with whom he was associated. His wife preceded him in death seven months. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Adolf Cress and Mrs. William Honeyman and two sisters, Mrs. Samuel Williams and Miss Sarah Vance. The funeral services were held from the residence at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon and were conducted by the Rev. D. S. Ferguson. Interment was made at Riverside. (Miami Union - June 8, 1911)

In the name of God, Amen I Christian Gatz of Frederick County in the state of Maryland being sick and weak in body, but of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding, considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof, and being desirous to settle my worldly affairs, and thereby be the better prepared to leave this world when it shall pleas God to call me hence do therefore make and publish this my last will and testament, in manner and form following, that is to say.

History / Bio:

Mt. Moriah Church is located about four miles south of Sabillesville. The first church was built of stone in 1831, when Rev. S. K. Hoshouer was pastor of the Smithsburg charge, with which it has always been connected. The cornerstone was laid June 1, 1830. Besides the pastors, Revs. H. L. Baugher, D. D., J. G. Anspach, D. D., and Rev. John Winters of the Lutheran Church, and Rev. John Reinkey of the Moravian church, took part in the religious services. it was intended to be a union church of Lutherans and Reformed. The lot for the church was donated by Mr. Geo. P. Fox, Sr., who, with Messr. Wm. Brown, St., Thomas Brown, Abraham Poorman, Christian Gates and Philip Fox were the first officers. The organization took place in 1834, during the pastorate of Rev. A. Reck, with 40 charter members, and at the same time 32 were added by confirmation.

James O. Harne purchased the adjoining farm consisting of 103 acres of excellent farm and timber land, the property known as the Old Gates Farm; Hauvers Dist.

Christian married Mary Ann Brown on 11 Jan 1817 in Washington County, Maryland, United States. Mary (daughter of Thomas Brown, Jr. and Susannah Rebecca Harman) was born about 1798 in Frederick County, Maryland, United States; died on 6 May 1884 in Frederick County, Maryland, United States; was buried in May 1884 in Frederick County, Maryland, United States.
