They became Friends and suffered considerable persecution, including distraint of goods many times, and imprisonment in 1664 for an unspecified length of time, for six months in 1665.[21] Friends met for worship in one another's homes usually twice a week, and then some from each local group gathered once a month to consider the business of the larger group. For this they met in the homes of Thomas Janney, John Badily, John Sharples, Thomas Brassey, John Symcock, and others.[22] In 1679 Thomas, along with 32 other Friends, including Thomas Holmes, George Keith, William Penn, and Thomas Ellwood, signed a testimony against William Rogers of Bristol for circulating a manuscript critical of Robert Barclay's Anarchy of the Ranters without showing it to Barclay or the Second-day meeting in London.[23] This gives an indication of the increasing strength of the Second Day Meeting, and the necessity felt by many Friends to have somewhat more structure to the nascent movement. Thomas's estate inventory, taken 6 Sept. 1678, was valued at £53.19.6; its relative small size is no doubt due to the continued depredations made by unscrupulous informers, constables, and priests. Thomas's will was proved 10 Sept. They had 7 children. [Source: Janney, compiled and copyright by MJP Grundy, 2008]

    Notes:

The next generation back, and the earliest for whom we have information is Thomas Janny, born about 1553 at Styall, the son of Randle Janny. his first wife, Ellen, by whom he had a daughter, Alyce, died February 7, 1578. in December of that year he married Jone Worthington and they had four children, Randle being the oldest. Jone died in 1589 and he married Catherine Cash by whom he had six children between 1592 and 1601. His will is dated September 1601. He was a husbandman owning several tracts of land and was evidently in very comfortable circumstances. Described as "a public spirited and charitable man." [Source: Carmen J. Finley, "Hackney, Harlan & Heald - Our Quaker Ancestors", (Computer printed: C. J. Finley, Santa Rosa, CA, 1987), pg. 22]

How many wives and children Thomas Janney had is not definitely known. In his Will only five children are mentioned by name, one clause simply leaving the residue "emongs all my children." His two marriages Dr ec. 7, 1578, to Jane Worthington, who was bur. Aug. 10, 1589, and by whom he had four children; and Nov. 4, 1590, to Katherine Cash, of Styall, who survived him, and by whom he had six children, are fully established; but whether he was married prior to 1578, is not certain. An entry in Wilmslow Parish Register reads "1570 Nov. 7, was cristened Aylce Janney daughter of Thos. Janney," and if she was the dau. of this Thomas, he was married three times, his first wife being Ellen _____, who was bur. Feby 7, 1578. As all the othe entries concerning Thomas Janney, in these Registers, about this time, appear to refer to him, this entry very possibly does also, but as it is not certain that it does, Alyce will not be stated to have been one of his children. Nothing is known regarding Thomas Janney, except what is learned from his will and inventory, and from the Parish Registers. He was husbandman owning several tracts of land, and from the amount of his inventory, (the value of a pound being several times as great then as now,) was evidently in very comfortable circumstances, and was a public spirited and charitable man.
