Charles Henry Leeth 1889 - 1977 |
|
Mary Gertrude Colvin 1894 - 1969 |
 |
Charles Henry Leeth farmer, was born July 22, 1889 in Payne,
Paulding County, Ohio. He left home at an early age, working at
various jobs in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Louisiana, eventually
settling down in Ohio. His first marriage, to
Alta Sutton, ended in divorce. On December 7, 1916 he married
Mary Gertrude Colvin born January 16, 1894 in Wayne
Township, Clinton County, Ohio. To this marriage were born five sons and one daughter.
Charles and Gertrude raised their family, along with the children of his first marriage,
in Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio, eventually moving to Miami Co. and then Preble
County, Ohio.
In 1918 Charles was inducted into the United States Army but after only a few days
he was discharged by reason of physical disability: he suffered from serious
varicose veins. Charles worked as a Machine Repair Foreman at Chrysler Airtemp
Corporation in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio while maintaining a farm in Preble
Co.. He retired from Chrysler and continued farming.
Charles liked to watch wrestling and westerns on TV, experimented making
homemade beer, and ran a small shop - on his farm - where he sharpened
scissors and saw blades. He suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of
88 on June 8, 1977 in Brookville, Montgomery County, Ohio.
When Gertrude was not busy gardening, milking cows, slopping
the hogs, feeding the chickens, and gathering eggs; she was canning, quilting or
crocheting. She made homemade sauerkraut, cottage cheese, and pickles.
Although the toll of arthritis caused Gertrude's fingers to swell and become
stiff she still hand quilted very beautiful quilts for the grandchildren. Many
family gatherings would bring all the grandchildren together for good food and
happy times. Gertrude fell and broke her hip from which she never
recovered. She had kidney failure and died at the age of 75 on December 19, 1969.
Both Charles and Gertrude are buried at Arlington Cemetery,
Montgomery County, Ohio.
Leven Elias Leeth and Louisa Mae Shelley were the parents of Charles Leeth.
According to family history, Leven was a circuit rider for the Methodist Church.
He was born in Pike County, Ohio and moved to Paulding Co. with his parents after a brief stay in Logan Co..
Leven's parents were John Leeth and Nancy Walls. The ancestry of John Leeth
has been very illusive. Nancy's parents moved to Ohio from Virginia.
Louisa Shelley was born in Paulding Co.. Her parents were Henry Shelley and
Mahala Michaels/Mikle, second wife of Henry, who was married three times in all.
Henry Shelley the son of Francis Shelley/Francois Schellet and Mary Jane
Shanberg/Jeanne Marie Scheneberg was born in France and immigrated with his
parents when he was two years of age. Henry served in Company H, 132nd Ohio National
Guards Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He suffered the loss of sight in is left eye
and impaired vision in the right eye. For this he received a pension of $8.00.
Gertrude's parents, Sidney A. Colvin and Clara Estella Florea were married in Clinton
County, Ohio, and later divorced. Both married again. Sidney raised tobacco until World
War II, when he worked at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. He sang Irish songs for me
when I was a baby. Sidney's father, Samuel S. Colvin
was 20 years old when he enlisted in the 89th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. During the Battle of
Chickamauga he was shot in the left shoulder blade while in the line of battle. He was treated
in a hospital at Nashville, Tennessee, then furloughed home for 30 days. He applied for, and received a
pension for the loss of use of his left arm. Samuel married Louisa Benham who later in life ran a
boarding house. She received a widows pension after the death of Samuel. Her parents were
Aaron Benham and Martha J. Kearns. Aaron was a wagon maker and carpenter. He married
three times.
Clara Florea's parents were Isaac Florea and Mary Jane Clevenger. After the death of Mary Jane,
Isaac was once again married. Isaac's father was
Henry Florea/Flora and his grandfather Isaac Florea/Flora. Mary Jane Clevenger
is my "brick wall". Her parents are unknown except for an entry in the census
that lists Isaac's mother-in-law as Sarah Clevenger.
