James Beck

A James Beck and Margaret his wife (with one chest and bedding) appear on the manifest dated July 10, 1804, of the American Ship Commerce which sailed from Belfast to the Port of Philadelphia. I believe this is the James and Margaret Beck who moved to Montgomery County, Ohio and then to Shelby County, Ohio. James was born in County Down, Ulster, Ireland; about 20 miles southwest of Belfast. He settled in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania before migrating West to Ohio.

On July 22, 1828 in the Montgomery County Common Pleas Court, James became a citizen of the United States of America as he "declared an oath that he will support the Constitution of the United States and of the State of Ohio and that he does absolutely and bonafidely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovreignty (sic) whatsoever and particularly to George the Fourth King of the United Kingdoms of Great Brittain and Ireland."

Margaret and James, along with some of their children are buried in Long Cemetery, Shelby County, Ohio.
