Henry Hormell

Some say the Hormells came from Holland and others say they came from the border of France and are Huguenot. A Johan Henrick Hermel, came to America on the ship Samuel from Rotterdam; arriving in the Port of Philadelphia. Listed in the Minutes of the Provincial Council dated September 21, 1727 are the names of thirty-nine Palatines, including Johan Henrick Hermel. At the Courthouse of Philadelphia, on August 17, 1731, this list was presented in court, and they, along with their families, declared their "Intentions were to settle and live peaceably in this Province;" they took and subscribed the Declaration of Fidelity and Abjuration. His relationship to Henry Hormell who removed to Ohio is unknown.

The Hormel\Hormell families settled on the West side of the Monongalia River, now in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Henry and John moved their families to Warren County, Ohio. Jacob remained in Pennsylvania. Some references state that all three were brothers; others state that John and Jacob were brothers and Henry was a cousin. One source believes Henry was a step-brother, all three having Johan Henrick Hermel (John Henry Hormel) as a father. I believe this scenario to be very possible, and until I have further information or proof otherwise, I am presenting our family tree in this manner...but with an open mind. Your comments and ideas are welcome.
