BIRTH: Henry Sellers, Sr.'s, birth is often cited as 1777, however, this is incorrect and much too late. A 1790 land sale in Rockingham County, Virginia, involving the "Heirs of Daniel Link, deceased" notes that one of Daniel Link's heirs is his daughter, Barbara, who is the "wife of Henry Sellers". The notation shows/proves that Henry Sellers and Barbara Link were already married by 1790. If born in 1777, Henry would've been either 12 or 13 when married, which is highly unlikely.
Instead, as evidenced by the 1787 Tax List taken for Rockingham County, Virginia, Henry Sellers, Sr. was already at least 21 years of age by 1787. Under the law passed in October 1786, the Tax Commissioner for the area was required annually on the 10th of March to begin visiting each person at his residence, to list the date visited, and to use a column on the Tax List for the names of all males over 21 years of age among other details. The value of this "1787 Census of Virginia" made up of the compiled tax lists allows us to see who a person's neighbors were since they were listed in order of visitation by the Tax Commissioner. Henry Sellers, Sr., his father, John, and his father-in-law, Daniel Link, were listed in succession as neighbors to one another on April 3, 1787 as follows:
SELLERS, HENRY: Person responsible for & charged with tax: Self. Taxed on 2 horses and 3 head of cattle.
SELLERS, JOHN: Person responsible for & charged with tax: Self. Taxed on 6 horses and 23 head of cattle.
LINK, DANIEL: Person responsible for & charged with tax: Self. Taxed on 3 horses and 8 head of cattle.
The Tax List shows Henry & John Sellers living next to one another with Daniel Link as their neighbor. Since Henry Sellers, Sr. is listed as the person responsible for paying the tax on his personal property of 2 horses and 3 cattle, he is by definition of the law passed in October 1786 a male 21 years of age & up by April 3, 1787, when visited by the Tax Commissioner. It is thus concluded that he was born at least by 1766. However, since his brother, Jacob, is confirmed to have been born on March 3, 1766, in Rockingham County, Virginia, Henry must have been born prior to 1766. His birth would had to have been after that of his sister Catherine, who was born September 11, 1763, but again prior to March 3, 1766, when his brother Jacob was born. Therefore, its more than likely than Henry Sellers, Sr. was born in either late 1764 or early 1765 and not 1777 as many researchers have previously noted.
