Notes |
Ira graduated at Ohio Wesleyan University 1872; appointed clerk in Treasury Department, Washington, D.C., by President Grant. Was graduated in Theological Department, B?oston University, and in 1878, sailed with the first party sent out by William Taylor to establish a self-supporting missionary work in Chile. The outgrowth of his work was the Union church and a mission school for boys at Santiago, Chile. His wife Adelaide (Whitfield) LaFetra, 1852-1916, founded Santiago College with her husband's assistance. These schools became noted educational institutions in Santiago, Chile. At last his health broke under the continued stress. In 1906 they retired to Glendora/Los Angelos, California and died there. He was a modest man, never heralding his deeds or seeking the praise of men.
