    • MANGIO, Charles A. "Chuck" 87, of New Carlisle, passed away Tuesday morning, April 25, 2017 at Koester Pavilion, Troy, following a lengthy illness. How do you summarize a life well-lived and filled with so much meaning? All who knew him would say he was a great husband, father, grandfather, scholar, intellectual, music lover, fast car driver, book lover, humanitarian, and lover of his Whispering Pine Farm. Chuck graduated from Grandview Heights High School in 1947. He attended Marquette University on a football scholarship and graduated in 1951. He began his career in the Air Force in 1958 after working at Battelle Memorial Institute. Chuck retired in 2003 as the Chief Scientist from the National Air and Space Intelligence Center after a distinguished career serving the Air Force in intelligence analysis and information systems. After two years of retirement, he once again made a major contribution to intelligence analysis by being the driving force behind the development of the Framework for Analytic Cognition. He and his wife, Barbara purchased and refurbished Whispering Pine Farm in 1986, realizing one of their long held dreams. They embraced the life of gentleman and gentlewoman farmers. Chuck loved to travel, especially with his children and grandchildren. Chuck relished good food and good wine, so much the better when shared with the company of family and friends. He deeply appreciated music, especially all forms of vocal music and the symphony. Chuck was a loving husband to Barbara for 65 years. He was a wonderful father to seven children: Christina (Kevin) Kampman, Frank (Connie) Mangio, Al Mangio, Barbara Witt (John Zaroba), Mary (Ron) Jackson, Regina Mangio, and Angela Mangio. He was the beloved grandfather to nine grandchildren: John Charles Stritenberger, Jason (Heather) Stritenberger, Arion (Jenny) Mangio, Chris Kampman (Jay Kulpa), Jeff Kampman (Chaz Estell), Victoria Johnson, Will Johnson, Anthony Mangio and Veronica Mangio. He was also blessed with two great grandsons: Avery Baker and Hunter Stritenberger. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Ethel Leeth Mangio, and a brother, James Mangio. He is survived by his beloved sister-in-law Joann Mangio and his nieces and nephew and their families in Seattle. We grieve his passing but remember all of the good times we shared and the joy he took in his family, work, and many interests. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Doctors without Borders, the May Festival of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the American Cancer Society, the Miami Valley Hospital Foundation, Hospice of the Miami Valley, or the charity of your choice. The family wishes to extend their most heartfelt thanks to Chuck's medical team and caretakers including Dr. Kalahasthy, Dr. Koduri, Dr. Kopp, and the dedicated staff of Koester Pavilion, Hospice of Miami County, and Home Instead.
