Left too young without a father's guiding hand, Charles worked at home and for neighbors on their farms - not finishing his schooling. He was employed at variable jobs including attendant at a Franklin, Ohio livery stable.
He married Nelle Johnson and they were parents of four children. His mother and sister, Anna, helped him rear the children after his wife left him.
Charles' life was not that of "dreams come true" but he never complained. He was a willing and consistent worker. A later marriage to Clara Puckett revolved around their five children and farming. He was loved and well cared for by this family until 90 years of age. [Source: Laura E.
