In 1818 Abraham Merritt became guardian of Samuel Homan, aged 19, an orphaned nephew of Joanna (Homan) Merritt. Samuel was a son of Frederick Homan, deceased, a brother of Joanna. Samuel chose Abraham Merritt to be his guardian.
Abraham and Rebecca (Hormell) Merritt raised a number of orphaned children including nephews and nieces:
A child named Ross.
Sarah Hudson, granddaughter of Abraham Merritt. She was an orphaned daughter of Moses and Sarah Jane (Merritt) Hudson.
John Allen, 1832- and Mary Ellen Allen, 1835- . they were orphaned children of Kirby Allen and his wife Matilda (Hormell) Allen, who was Rebecca's sister. Kirby Allen was a witness to the 1830 will of Henry Hormell, Rebecca.
Dewitt Clinton Norton "Clint", 1825-1912, orphaned at the age of five, son of Joseph Norton, a freighter between Ohio and Baltimore, and his wife Anna Hormell, a sister of Rebecca. [Source: Jack T. Hutchinson, "A Quaker Migration to Southwestern Ohio", (March 1996), pg. 9,10]

Rebecca Hormell, Dec. 2, 1793-Feb. 19, 1872, who became Abraham Merritt's second wife was first married on Nov. 22, 1810 to Richard lafferty (sometimes referred to as John Richard lafferty). He never returned from a trip down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.
