Remarks: Here is buried Sarah CHAPMAN, nee COLVIN, who was the first
white child born in what is now the Township of Hamer. The sign at the
entrance to this cemetery reads: "Chapman 1829 -1933 Cemetery." Being
situated on top of Caleb's Hill, it is also known as Caleb Hill
Cemetery. There is a beautiful view to the west and south of the
surrounding countryside. On June 22, 1868, in Original Book 39, page
168, Highland County Deed Records, Caleb CHAPMAN and Sarah his wife
conveyed to William STRANGE, Henry ROUSH and Solomon HOLDEN, Trustees of
Hamer Township "for and in consideration of the natural love and respect
that we owe our deceased friends and relations...all of the following
described real estate situated in Hamer Township, Highland County, Ohio,
have in fact been set apart by the owners and dedicated as a grave yard
and burial ground for the public and used as such by the public in all
time to come," being 21/40 of an acre. This cemetery is still used for
burials.
