MARRIAGE and BIOGRAPHY
Adam Sellers married Mary Amelia Darr on November 28, 1839, in Parkeville, Parke County, Indiana. After his father, Christian, died in Parke County in 1841, Adam inherited from him 160 acres in Section twenty three, Township 16, Range Six, and 80 acres located in the East half of the North East quarter of Section thirty two. There Adam and Mary Amelia settled and raised 5 children. Though shown together on the 1860 Census for Parke County, Indiana, Adam and Mary Amelia split soon after. By the time of the 1870 Census, "Amelia" is listed as the head of household in Greene Township, Parke County, Indiana, with son, Thomas, and daughter, Susan, living in the household. By comparing Mary's neighbors on the 1860 Census to those on the 1870 Census, it can be concluded that Mary remained in the home while Adam had left.
When Adam left, he apparently headed "home" to Lebanon, Warren County, Ohio, where he had been born and raised. Marriage records in Warren County, Ohio, show that Adam Sellers remarried to Mary Ann (Newport) Hormel, the widow of Jarias Hormel, on June 10, 1869. They can be found listed together on the 1870 Census for Lebanon, Warren County, Ohio, living next door to Mary Ann (Newport) Hormel's children by her first husband, Joseph C. and Sarah L. Hormel.
By the time of the 1880 Census, Mary Ann (Newport) (Hormel) Sellers is found living in the household of her daughter and son-in-law, Sarah L. (Hormel) and Thomas E. Bell, and is listed as a "Widow". Once again, Adam Sellers is nowhere to be found. No divorce record has been located for him and Mary A. Hormel, and no death nor burial record has been found for him either. Mary's listing as a "Widow" on the 1880 Census is a strong indicator that Adam had died, however, its just as likely at this point that she was listed as a widow because of the death of her first husband, Jarias Hormel, on October 3, 1851. And, oddly enough, Mary's obituary lists her name as Mary A. (Newport) Hormel with no mention whatsoever of a 2nd marriage to Adam Sellers nor anything about him at all. What eventually became of Adam remains a mystery.
As for Adam's first wife, Mary Amelia (Darr) Sellers, she moved in the early 1870's from Parke County, Indiana, to Marion, Douglas County, Kansas, following all of her then adult children. By 1880, a nearly 60 year old Mary Amelia (Darr) Sellers had remarried in Marion, Kansas, to a widower, Mathias Sowers. They eventually relocated to Osage County, Kansas, where all her children were living, and Mary and Mathias spent their remaining years there. The name on her gravestone lists her as "Mary Sowers", and she is buried next to second husband, Mathias Sowers, in the Valley Brook Cemetery in Osage County, Kansas. A short newspaper article about her death listed her as 'Grandma Sowers'.
No divorce record has been located yet for Mary Amelia Darr and Adam Sellers nor has any marriage record been located for Mary and Mathias.
