The most comprehensive work found on the Janneys is "The Quaker Janneys of Cheshire" by Miles White, Jr., compiled in 1904 and based on earlier work by Samuel M. Janney of Loudon County, VA. Much of the following is based on his work which was very carefully documented.

White gives many variations in the spelling of the Janney name. Included among them are Jeny, Jenny, Jenninges, Genys, Genynges (in York) and Janion, Janny, Jannye, Jannyon, Jannyne, Jannys, Jenion, Jenney, Jenny, Jennys, Jenyngs, Jenyus, Jenys, Guynes, Gynes, Gynney, Gynny, Yannes and Yannis (in Lancashire and Cheshire).

Mary (Janney) Bancroft of Wilmslow was christened 1639/40, daughter of Randle and Ann (Knevett) Janney of Handforth. Wilmslow records show there was also a younger child, William, christened in 1641. It is a bit puzzling that no other children of Randle and Ann were found in that they apparently, lived to an advanced age. The will of Ann Janney, of Ashton under Lyne, was proved in 1676, but there is no external evidence to lead to the supposition that it was the will of Randle's wife. Friends records show the death of an Anne Janney of Etchells February 28, 1698/99; and Etchells was where her daughter, Mary, was living at the time.

"Sufferings of the People Called Quakers" by Joseph Besse, published in 1753 in London, gives accounts of many persecutions of the Quakers because of their religious beliefs. Ann Janney, in 1663, is listed along with William and Thomas Janney as the subject of persecution and she 'suffered distress of goods.' It seems likely that this is the mother of Mary (Janney) Bancroft. White also believes Randle was not a Friend. It would appear that they may have lived elsewhere for a period and the records of other children have not been found. Mary's brother, William, was born in Staffordshire, and these records have not been searched. [Source: Carmen J. Finley, "Hackney, Harlan & Heald - Our Quaker Ancestors", (Computer printed: C. J. The name Null is spell Näll in German. Charles Null is listed in the Tithables 1792 with 2 horses and living in East District 14, now in Page County.

In 1792, Charles' brother, Christian had gone to Warren County, Ohio, to look for better farming land than what they had in Virginia. In early 1798, Charles joined Christian in Ohio, and together they built what is still known today as the Null House. By 1802, most all of the Null family emigrated from Rockingham County, Virginia, to Warren County, Ohio, settling in the Clear Creek Township. In later years, the Null House became a haven as part of the Underground Railroad, and is still located just off the Heatherwoode Gold Course. The next generation back, and the earliest for whom we have information is Thomas Janny, born about 1553 at Styall, the son of Randle Janny. his first wife, Ellen, by whom he had a daughter, Alyce, died February 7, 1578. in December of that year he married Jone Worthington and they had four children, Randle being the oldest. Jone died in 1589 and he married Catherine Cash by whom he had six children between 1592 and 1601. His will is dated September 1601. He was a husbandman owning several tracts of land and was evidently in very comfortable circumstances. Described as "a public spirited and charitable man." [Source: Carmen J. Finley, "Hackney, Harlan & Heald - Our Quaker Ancestors", (Computer printed: C. J. Finley, Santa Rosa, CA, 1987), pg. 22]

How many wives and children Thomas Janney had is not definitely known. In his Will only five children are mentioned by name, one clause simply leaving the residue "emongs all my children." His two marriages Dr ec. 7, 1578, to Jane Worthington, who was bur. Aug. 10, 1589, and by whom he had four children; and Nov. 4, 1590, to Katherine Cash, of Styall, who survived him, and by whom he had six children, are fully established; but whether he was married prior to 1578, is not certain. An entry in Wilmslow Parish Register reads "1570 Nov. 7, was cristened Aylce Janney daughter of Thos. Janney," and if she was the dau. of this Thomas, he was married three times, his first wife being Ellen _____, who was bur. Feby 7, 1578. As all the othe entries concerning Thomas Janney, in these Registers, about this time, appear to refer to him, this entry very possibly does also, but as it is not certain that it does, Alyce will not be stated to have been one of his children. [Source: Southern History Association, Publications of the Southern History Association, Volume 8, Washington, D.C.: The Association, 1904, Article by Miles White, Jr., Baltimore, Md., pg. 119-128]

Nothing is known regarding Thomas Janney, except what is learned from his will and inventory, and from the Parish Registers. He was husbandman owning several tracts of land, and from the amount of his inventory, (the value of a pound being several times as great then as now,) was evidently in very comfortable circumstances, and was a public spirited and charitable man. The only daughter that I recall, I believe her name was Gwendolyn, and I do not recall her married name; but her husband's given name was Quincy. The reason I can recall this so well is that in 1913 - the time of the Dayton flood - I went with Uncle Walter Lackey and Dad over to Dayton and we got as far as Ludlow Street at the Montgomery County, fairground. While there, we met Quincy, who was a traveling salesman. He had returned to Dayton and walking the streets. He could not get over to Riverdale where his family lived, and he was a very worried man. Later on, after the flood waters receded, we again went to Dayton and had to get a pass because everything was under Martial Law, and we drove over to Riverdale to his home. His family had survived the flood and water had reached up to the second story of their home and everything on the first floor was practically ruined. The original German spelling of the name was "Johan Adam Zeller". Anglicanized by both the English courts as well as English society in general, the English version of the name became "Adam Sellers". The last name is also found in various court records either as "Seller" or as "Sellars". As evidenced by the estate records at his death in Warren County, Ohio, he was known as "Adam Sellers".

...Thomas Flora was the son of James and Penelope Davis Flora; also listed as FLURRY, FLORIE, FLOREY, FLORRY, FLOWRE, and FLORA; christened St. Sepulchre, Newgate, in London on December 6, 1702. He was indentured for five years to be transported to Maryland by an agent, Captain John Larkin, witnessed by his mother, Penelope Flora, St. Giles Cripplegate, London, 1 February 1719; transported on the ship Gilbert by Captain Darby Lux, October 1720, and landed at Annapolis, Maryland, May 1721. His wife's name is unknown. Once having served out his indenture, he moved several times including to Anne Arundel County, Maryland, Orange County, Virginia, and Washington County, Maryland. His probable children lived in the Maryland and Virginia region.
...LONDON: Thomas Flora, age 17, was indentured for 5 years, to be transported to Maryland, Captain John Larkin was the agent for the indenture which was signed and witnessed by Penelope Flora, mother, on February 1, 1719. Since the new year then began in March, Thomas may well not have been actually transported until early in 1720.
...In "Bonded Passengers to America", is found this entry: "Florie, Thomas, transported Oct. 1720 on the ship Gilbert. Landing Certificate issued at Annapolis (Maryland) in May, 1721, age 19, dark." Darby Lux was the captain of the Gilbert. Since the Anne Arundel County, Maryland, land records of the early 1700's show Darby Lux as a land owner, perhaps Thomas Flora served out his indenture for Darby Lux, ship captain and land owner.
The following church records were found in the I.G.I. for London, England:
...6 April 1698, James Flory married Penelope Davis, St. James (Church) Dukes Place.
...6 December 1702, Thomas, son of James Flurry and Penelope, was baptized in St. Sepulchre.
...6 July 1701, James, son of James Flory and Penelope, was christened at St. Bride, Fleet Street. (Evidently this James died young as another son, also named James, was christened) 23 July 1714, James, son of James Flurry, was christened at St. Giles Cripplegate. (Source: Gladys Donson, Lawrence F. Athy, Jr., The Thomas Flora Family of London, Maryland & Virginia(Houston, TX: Donath Publishing, 1995))

...Thomas Flory (Florey, Flore) was sentenced to be transported to Maryland from Newgate Prison in October 1720. He was on board the ship Gilbert October 27, 1720, and he arrived and was issued a landing certificate at Annapolis May 1721, age 19, dark. Felons thus transported generally served for a period of seven years although some were for as long as 14 years. Records indicate that Thomas didn't arrive in what is now Washington County, Maryland until 1735. The record in Anne Arundel County that he ran afoul of the authorities for not burning tobacco seems to indicate he may have set himself up as a planter after his bondage. His older children would have been born in eastern Maryland.
...So what happened to young Thomas between the time he voluntarily signed an agreement for 5 years (Thomas Flora, from St. Giles Criplegate, agent, James Lindsay, St. Martins in the Field, Middlesex, for 5 years to Maryland, age 17, his mark, witnessed by Penelope Flora) and the time he was transported as a felon for seven years?

The Shugars Family. Henry Shugars was a native of Berks county, Penn., and was born in 1813, the son of Michael Shugars. In 1840 he entered eighty acres of land in Benton township, and two years later settled upon the same, following the pursuit of the farmer all his life. He lived upon his land until his death, which occurred March 8, 1891, and in his demise the community lost one of its valued citizens. He married Miss Elizabeth Howman, a native of Pennsylvania, who died March 28, 1806. Their family consisted of these children: William, who died in the United States service at Washington, D. C., as a member of company I, One Hundred and Thirty-second Ohio volunteer infantry; Barbara, the wife of Daniel Michael, who died July 9, 1889; Catherine, now Mrs. Eli Woods; Franklin and Henry. Henry Shugars, Sr., was during his life a member of the Lutheran church. Franklin, his son, was born August 3, 1849, in Benton township, and was reared to manhood on the homestead, obtaining his instruction in the county schools. In partnership with Henry, under the firm name of Shugar Bros., he began the breeding of horses and cattle, and cultivated 288 acres of land. As a republican he filled the office of supervisor for his township, and served the people acceptably. Mr. Shugars was married in June, 1880, to Miss Ann Brady, of Benton township, the daughter of Michael Brady, an old and well-known resident of the county. They have three children, called Ella F., Mary B., and William R., ad are highly respected in the community where they reside. Henry Shugars, Jr., was the youngest son of the parents above sketched. His birth occurred February 15, 1852, and he was raised and educated in Benton township. He became a member of the firm of Shugars Bros., formed in 1871 for the purpose of stock raising, and is successful in his calling. In 1874, Mr. Shugars married Miss Catherine Marion, and the union was blessed with the birth of one child, Viola G., born March 24, 1875. Mrs. Shugars is the daughter of William Marion, of Benton township, and with her husband enjoys general esteem. The latter is a republican in politics, and is interested in the welfare of his party.

The spelling of the name varies: it is Strettle, Strettel, Strettell, Strethull, Strettill, or Strethill even when it refers to one and the same man. "Strettle or Strethull" was a small Manor in Mere, held by a family bearing the local name, and probably descended from Gilbert de Mara. (Source: Rev. The Summer 1909, according to a clipping from the Paulding Republican, featured not only storms but lots of lightning. Three barns were struck and burned in July, one at the Henry Shelley Farm north of Payne, one at the Abe Mathias farm northeast of Payne and one belonging to John Rusell east of Paulding. Lost in the fires were horses, machinery and hay.

Their love affair was a peculiar one. Jane had been drying apples for Jacob on shares. When it was time to divide the apples Jacob exclaimed, "Thee need not divide the apples, if thee is willing thee can have them all." Jane being willing, they were happily married; Jacob being sixty years old at the time of the marriage. There were five children born to their union, two sons and three daughters. There is a record of a Florea infant buried on Isaac's lot in the Martinsville Cemetery. The parents are given as Macie and W. E. Florea, and the dates as 5-13-1907. This is the only Macie that I knew, so I think there may be a mistake, and maybe they lost another infant that isn't recorded in the family history.

They became Friends and suffered considerable persecution, including distraint of goods many times, and imprisonment in 1664 for an unspecified length of time, for six months in 1665.[21] Friends met for worship in one another's homes usually twice a week, and then some from each local group gathered once a month to consider the business of the larger group. For this they met in the homes of Thomas Janney, John Badily, John Sharples, Thomas Brassey, John Symcock, and others.[22] In 1679 Thomas, along with 32 other Friends, including Thomas Holmes, George Keith, William Penn, and Thomas Ellwood, signed a testimony against William Rogers of Bristol for circulating a manuscript critical of Robert Barclay's Anarchy of the Ranters without showing it to Barclay or the Second-day meeting in London.[23] This gives an indication of the increasing strength of the Second Day Meeting, and the necessity felt by many Friends to have somewhat more structure to the nascent movement. Thomas's estate inventory, taken 6 Sept. 1678, was valued at £53.19.6; its relative small size is no doubt due to the continued depredations made by unscrupulous informers, constables, and priests. Thomas's will was proved 10 Sept. They had 7 children. [Source: Janney, compiled and copyright by MJP Grundy, 2008]
